Inhibition of matrix metalloproteinase-2 modulates malignant behaviour of oral squamous cell carcinoma cells

Antonio Celentano et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that MMP2 inhibition affects the survival, migration, and invasion ability of oral cancer cells in vitro for the first time. Additionally, significant differences in MMP2 expression between oral cancer tissues and normal tissues were observed. Further research on the role of MMP2 in oral squamous cell carcinoma and novel mechanisms to inhibit MMP2-dependent pathways should be encouraged.

Modulation of Matrix Metalloproteinases by Plant-derived Products

Nur Najmi Mohamad Anuar et al.

Summary: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are enzymes responsible for the degradation, repair, and remodeling of extracellular matrix components. Plant-derived active compounds have shown potential as MMP inhibitors with applications in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries, but further in vivo studies and clinical trials are needed for therapeutic validation.

Multifunctional intracellular matrix metalloproteinases: implications in disease

Wesam Bassiouni et al.

Summary: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of zinc-dependent endopeptidases that were initially discovered as proteases targeting extracellular proteins. However, recent research has revealed their crucial intracellular roles in various pathological conditions, including cardiovascular renal disorders, inflammation, and malignancy. In addition to MMP-2, at least eleven other MMPs have been identified to function intracellularly, highlighting the importance of understanding their roles in cellular processes and potential as therapeutic targets.

Resveratrol inhibited the metastatic behaviors of cisplatin-resistant human oral cancer cells via phosphorylation of ERK/p-38 and suppression of MMP-2/9

Wen-Shin Chang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that resveratrol can suppress the metastasis and invasion capabilities of cisplatin-resistant oral cancer cells by inhibiting the phosphorylation of ERK and p-38. This signaling cascade may provide insights into the treatment and metastatic mechanisms of drug-resistant oral cancer.

Bcl-xL expression and regulation in the progression, recurrence, and cisplatin resistance of oral cancer

Manzar Alam et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the important role of Bcl-xL in the progression and drug resistance of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), with AP-1 (Fra-2) showing the largest association with Bcl-xL mRNA expression. Further experiments confirmed that knockdown of Fra-2 and application of nimbolide could decrease Bcl-xL expression and induce apoptosis in drug-resistant OSCC cells.
