A contemporary guide to chromosomal copy number profiling in the diagnosis of renal cell carcinoma

Sounak Gupta et al.

Summary: The routine clinical implementation of molecular methods in the evaluation of renal neoplasia is limited, and the current standard of care primarily relies on morphologic and immunophenotypic analysis. However, global copy number profiling using SNP-arrays is being increasingly used for renal tumor profiling. These analyses have diagnostic and prognostic applications, but their universal adoption may be influenced by factors such as cost, reimbursement, and turnaround time.

Novel, emerging and provisional renal entities: The Genitourinary Pathology Society (GUPS) update on renal neoplasia

Kiril Trpkov et al.

Summary: The Genitourinary Pathology Society conducted a review focusing on recent advances in renal neoplasia, underscoring the importance of both morphology and molecular features for accurate diagnosis. They proposed new criteria for categorizing novel, emerging, and provisional entities in order to clarify the evolving classification of renal neoplasia and reduce the number of unclassifiable cases.

Low-Grade Oncocytic Tumor of Kidney (CK7-Positive, CD117-Negative): Incidence in a single institutional experience with clinicopathological and molecular characteristics

Oleksandr Kravtsov et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the long-term clinical follow-up data, clinicopathological and molecular characteristics of low-grade oncocytic tumor of the kidney (LOT). It was found that LOT is a rare but indolent renal neoplasm, representing about 4% of tumors historically diagnosed as oncocytoma, with no identified metastases and a distinct entity in renal neoplasia.

Renal Neoplasia in Tuberous Sclerosis: A Study of 41 Patients

Sounak Gupta et al.

Summary: The study analyzed 276 renal tumors from 41 TSC patients, with most tumors being benign, but a few showing metastatic behavior. Epithelioid AMLs were enriched for alterations of TP53, RB1, and ATRX. None of the patients died of renal epithelial neoplasms, with most deaths resulting from direct complications of TSC.
