Role of computed tomography in COVID-19

Gianluca Pontone et al.

Summary: COVID-19 has rapidly spread worldwide, primarily causing pneumonia and respiratory distress, but also affecting other organs. This article discusses the role of non-contrast chest CT in diagnosis, follow-up, and prognosis, as well as its application in detecting acute pulmonary embolism and differential diagnosis of myocardial injury.

Efficacy and safety of COVID-19 vaccines in older people

Roy L. Soiza et al.

Summary: The safety and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines in older people are crucial for their success, but there is currently a lack of data. While some Phase III trials have made efforts to recruit older people, those with co-morbidities and frailty have still been largely excluded. Older people, their carers, and healthcare professionals will need to make decisions on vaccination acceptance based on limited evidence.

Sex Differences in Immunity: Implications for the Development of Novel Vaccines Against Emerging Pathogens

Anahita Fathi et al.

Summary: Vaccines are crucial in saving lives, but responses to vaccination may vary based on factors like gender and age. As COVID-19 vaccines are being developed, the gender-specific differences in vaccine response need more attention and research.

Single-dose administration and the influence of the timing of the booster dose on immunogenicity and efficacy of ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 (AZD1222) vaccine: a pooled analysis of four randomised trials

Merryn Voysey et al.

Summary: The AZD1222 vaccine has been approved for emergency use in the UK with an interval of 4-12 weeks between doses. Analysis shows that the vaccine is efficacious with two doses and provides immunoprotection after the first dose before the second dose is administered.

BNT162b2 mRNA Covid-19 Vaccine in a Nationwide Mass Vaccination Setting

Noa Dagan et al.

Summary: A study conducted in Israel on nearly 600,000 individuals showed that the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine was effective in reducing the risk of infection, hospitalization, and severe Covid-19. The effectiveness in preventing death was 72% during the period from day 14 through day 20 after the first dose, and hospitalization was reduced by 87% for the period 7 or more days after the second dose, similar to results from a randomized trial.

The role of CT imaging for management of COVID-19 in epidemic area: early experience from a University Hospital

Vikram Rao Bollineni et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the clinical value of chest CT scans compared to RT-PCR in diagnosing COVID-19, finding that chest CT has high sensitivity and high negative predictive value, making it a potential alternative primary screening tool for COVID-19 in epidemic areas. Even with a negative RT-PCR result, a positive CT finding may still suggest a COVID-19 infection.

Impact and effectiveness of mRNA BNT162b2 vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 infections and COVID-19 cases, hospitalisations, and deaths following a nationwide vaccination campaign in Israel: an observational study using national surveillance data

Eric J. Haas et al.

Summary: This study assessed the real-world effectiveness of the Pfizer-BioNTech mRNA COVID-19 vaccine BNT162b2 in Israel, showing high efficacy in preventing SARS-CoV-2 infections, hospitalizations, severe disease, and death. As vaccine coverage increased, there were marked declines in SARS-CoV-2 outcomes, indicating that COVID-19 vaccination can help control the pandemic.

Safety and immunogenicity of one versus two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine BNT162b2 for patients with cancer: interim analysis of a prospective observational study

Leticia Monin et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of the BNT162b2 vaccine in cancer patients. The results showed poor efficacy of a single vaccine dose in cancer patients, with significantly increased immunogenicity in solid cancer patients after a vaccine boost at day 21. Therefore, it is recommended to prioritize cancer patients for an early second dose on day 21.
