Follow-up practices for children and adolescents with celiac disease: results of an international survey

Margreet Wessels et al.

Summary: Follow-up practices for pediatric celiac patients in Europe may be enhanced, particularly in terms of a more rational use of tests, dietary and quality of life assessments, and transition to adult care. Evidence-based advice from international scientific societies is necessary.

Estimating the Impact of Verification Bias on Celiac Disease Testing

Isabel A. Hujoel et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of verification bias on the diagnostic accuracy of IgA tTG in detecting celiac disease, revealing that the 2016 CER may have overestimated the sensitivity of IgA tTG. Caution should be exercised when interpreting negative IgA tTG results to rule out celiac disease in clinical practice.

Analysis of gluten immunogenic peptides in feces to assess adherence to the gluten-free diet in pediatric celiac patients

Maria Roca et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of detecting gluten immunogenic peptides (GIP) in feces as a tool to monitor dietary compliance to the gluten-free diet (GFD) in pediatric patients with celiac disease (CD). The results indicated that GIP detection is more effective in identifying inadvertent gluten consumption compared to food records, and there is a positive correlation between the concentration of GIP in feces and the amount of gluten intake. Further research on gastrointestinal factors influencing GIP recovery is needed to better understand interindividual variations.

Epidemiology, Presentation, and Diagnosis of Celiac Disease

Benjamin Lebwohl et al.

Summary: The incidence of celiac disease is increasing due to both improved recognition and a real increase of the disorder. The reasons for this true rise are unclear, but may be related to environmental factors. Early-life gluten exposure is a major focus of prevention efforts.

Poor Sensitivity of Fecal Gluten Immunogenic Peptides and Serum Antibodies to Detect Duodenal Mucosal Damage in Celiac Disease Monitoring

Emilio J. Laserna-Mendieta et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of using fecal gluten immunogenic peptides (GIPs) to detect duodenal lesions in celiac disease (CD) patients on a long-lasting gluten-free diet (GFD). The results showed that GIP displayed low sensitivity but acceptable specificity for the detection of mucosal damage in CD.

Adherence to gluten-free diet and follow-up of pediatric celiac disease patients, during childhood and after transition to adult care

Michal Kori et al.

Summary: Regular follow-up and normalization of serology before the age of 18 in pediatric CD patients increase the likelihood of maintaining a gluten-free diet and having negative serology as adults. Most patients continue to adhere to a gluten-free diet and experience rare complications even after transitioning to adult care.

A randomized trial of a transglutaminase 2 inhibitor for celiac disease

Detlef Schuppan et al.

Summary: In this study, treatment with ZED1227, a selective oral transglutaminase 2 inhibitor, was found to attenuate gluten-induced duodenal mucosal damage in patients with celiac disease at all three dose levels, with the highest dose potentially improving symptoms and quality of life for patients. Common adverse events included headache, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and rash in a small percentage of patients.
