Associations between dietary patterns and the metabolic syndrome in older adults in New Zealand: the REACH study

Karen D. Mumme et al.

Summary: The study found that Mediterranean and prudent dietary patterns were not significantly associated with the metabolic syndrome in older adults, while the Western dietary pattern showed a positive association with the syndrome. This suggests that the Western dietary pattern may be a risk factor for the metabolic syndrome in the older population.

Dietary patterns and trajectories of global- and domain-specific cognitive decline in the Lothian Birth Cohort 1936

Janie Corley et al.

Summary: The study found that adherence to a Mediterranean-style diet was associated with better verbal ability, while adherence to a traditional diet was associated with better language ability. However, long-term adherence to a healthy diet may not necessarily predict a reduced risk of global or domain-specific cognitive decline.

Relative Validity and Reproducibility of a Food Frequency Questionnaire for Assessing Dietary Patterns and Food Group Intake in Older New Zealand Adults: The Researching Eating, Activity, and Cognitive Health Study

Karen D. Mumme et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the dietary patterns of older adults in the REACH study, and found that the REACH FFQ generated dietary patterns with acceptable reproducibility and relative validity. This indicates that the FFQ can be used to examine associations between dietary patterns and health outcomes in older New Zealand adults.
