Direct measurement of the direction-dependent mechanical behaviour of skeletal muscle extracellular matrix

Stephan Kohn et al.

Summary: This study reports the first comprehensive dataset on the anisotropic mechanical properties of isolated endo- and perimysial extracellular matrix of skeletal muscle, along with protocols for preparation and testing. The results contribute to understanding muscle mechanics and load transfer mechanisms within muscle tissue, and are relevant to constitutive formulation of muscle tissue and tissue-engineering grafts.

3D finite element models from serial section histology of skeletal muscle tissue - The role of micro-architecture on mechanical behaviour

R. Kuravi et al.

Summary: This study created virtual samples of porcine skeletal muscle tissue by reconstructing three-dimensional finite element models from histological sections, finding the tissue to be heterogeneous along fascicles and inadequately described by transverse isotropy. Ignoring fiber undulations and non-uniform cross-sections only moderately affected passive response in tensile and compressive modes, but became crucial for predicting responses to external loads and activation.
