Current and future carbon stocks in coastal wetlands within the Great Barrier Reef catchments

Micheli Duarte de Paula Costa et al.

Summary: This study estimated soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks and their drivers in the coastal wetlands of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) catchments for the first time, finding that climatic variables contributed significantly to SOC stocks in mangroves while soil type played a key role in seagrass meadows. The total SOC stock in the GBR catchments was approximately 137 Tg C, representing a small percentage of both Australia's and global SOC stocks, with potential carbon gains due to landward migration resulting from projected sea level rise.

Fresh waters and estuaries of the Great Barrier Reef catchment: Effects and management of anthropogenic disturbance on biodiversity, ecology and connectivity

Richard G. Pearson et al.

Summary: The freshwater and estuarine systems in the Great Barrier Reef catchment on the Australian east coast are highly biodiverse with numerous endemic species, but are facing impacts from climate change, human activities, and excessive sediments, nutrients, and pesticides. These ecosystems require comprehensive management and further research in areas such as physical and biological processes in ground waters, large rivers, and estuaries.

Ecological impact assessment of climate change and habitat loss on wetland vertebrate assemblages of the Great Barrier Reef catchment and the influence of survey bias

Adam D. Canning et al.

Summary: Wetlands in the Great Barrier Reef catchment area in Australia face multiple pressures, including habitat loss from agricultural expansion and urbanization, as well as impacts from climate change. Proximity to urban areas was found to have the most significant influence on predicting species richness and turnover in vertebrates in wetlands, with various wetland habitats and climate factors also playing important roles. The study highlights the importance of understanding and addressing survey biases in modeling species distributions to effectively manage biodiversity and mitigate the impacts of habitat loss and climate change on wetland-affiliated vertebrates.

Financial incentives for large-scale wetland restoration: Beyond markets to common asset trusts

Adam D. Canning et al.

Summary: Wetlands globally provide trillions of dollars worth of ecosystem services, but are in urgent need of large-scale restoration due to drainage and pollution. Payment for ecosystem service schemes vary in their goals, structure, challenges, and effectiveness. Common asset trusts could support wetland restoration through coordinated, collaborative, prioritized, and transparent processes.
