How can we justify grouping of nanoforms for hazard assessment? Concepts and tools to quantify similarity

Nina Jeliazkova et al.

Summary: This paper discusses methods for grouping nanoforms and evaluating data similarity, emphasizing the property-by-property evaluation of the data matrix to support grouping. Multidimensional approaches were found to offer unexpected insights from a scientific perspective, but were deemed difficult to use in a regulatory context.

Aquatic Mesocosm Strategies for the Environmental Fate and Risk Assessment of Engineered Nanomaterials

Andrea Carboni et al.

Summary: Mesocosms have emerged as a useful tool for studying the environmental impacts of engineered nanomaterials over the past decade. Study results show that mesocosm size, experiment duration, and indoor/outdoor location play major roles in defining the distribution of ENMs/metals. While benthic communities may face higher exposure levels, planktonic organisms are generally exposed to lower concentrations of potentially more reactive and toxic ENM species.

MESOCOSM: A mesocosm database management system for environmental nanosafety

Ali Ayadi et al.

Summary: This paper introduces the construction of MESOCOSM, a centralized database management system for environmental nanosafety research, containing experimental data from mesocosm experiments to help understand and quantify environmental hazards and exposure. The database includes thousands of data entities related to various ENMs and nano-products, and is equipped with a powerful application with a user-friendly interface for data management and search. MESOCOSM aims to predict and explain ENMs behavior in different ecosystems and their potential impacts on the environment throughout the nanoproducts lifecycle, benefiting the nanosafety community by providing critical information and additional characterization factors for predicting ENMs interactions with the environment and their risks.

Integrated dynamic probabilistic material flow analysis of engineered materials in all European countries

Veronique Adam et al.

Summary: The uncertainties of potential environmental risks associated with engineered nanomaterials are addressed using the probabilistic material flow analysis (PMFA), with advancements made to increase complexity and consider dynamics and fate during recycling. The integrated dynamic PMFA method was used to assess the release forms of nano-Ag, nano-TiO2, and nano-ZnO into different environmental compartments in European countries from 2000 to 2020. The results emphasize the importance of considering the full life cycle of nanoproducts and variations between countries.

Variation in dissolution behavior among different nanoforms and its implication for grouping approaches in inhalation toxicity

Johannes G. Keller et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of dissolution behavior of different nanoforms on toxicity assessment, revealing differences in dissolution rates, half-times, and transformations under specific conditions. Numerical rules were proposed based on the observations to assess the similarity of NFs within a group.
