Microbial community structure in the river sediments from upstream of Guanting Reservoir: Potential impacts of reclaimed water recharge

En Xie et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the microbial community structure in the river sediments upstream of Guanting Reservoir in Beijing, China, and found a significant impact of wastewater treatment plants on the local microbial community structure. The results indicated that reclaimed water had a significant influence on microbial community, while water parameters and concentrations of organic contaminants remained stable.

Mixing with broad-leaved trees shapes the rhizosphere soil fungal communities of coniferous tree species in subtropical forests

Wen-Qing Li et al.

Summary: Replanting broad-leaved trees in coniferous forests can increase soil quality, fungal abundance, and diversity, leading to improved nutrient uptake by trees. In subtropical China, Masson pine is more adaptable than slash pine for establishing mixed forests.

Assessment of the presence of transformation products of pharmaceuticals in agricultural environments irrigated with reclaimed water by wide-scope LC-QTOF-MS suspect screening

A. B. Martinez-Piernas et al.

Summary: The study utilized a suspect screening approach to comprehensively investigate potential transformation products (TPs) associated with pharmaceuticals in real tomato crops under long-term reclaimed water irrigation. The results showed the presence of various TPs in reclaimed water, soil, and leaves, but not in tomato fruits.

The energy-food-water nexus: Water footprint of Henan-Hubei-Hunan in China

Shibao Lu et al.

Summary: Energy security, food security, and water security are the three most prominent problems in human survival and sustainable development. This study uses quantitative analysis to estimate the Central China region's energy-food production water footprint (WF) and virtual trade water flow, and proposes a Modified Water Stress Index (MWSI) associated with virtual water outflows. The results indicate that the energy and food production WF and virtual trade water flow are on the rise, causing water stress in local and export areas.

Fate and risk assessment of emerging contaminants in reclaimed water production processes

Yuan Meng et al.

Summary: Reclaimed water is widely used in irrigation and industrial production, and understanding the behavior of emerging contaminants in the production process is crucial for setting water quality standards. A study in Beijing investigated 43 emerging contaminants in reclaimed water treatment plants, with pharmaceuticals and personal care products being the dominant pollutants. The study found that antibiotic resistance genes and organophosphorus flame retardants were challenging to remove, while tertiary treatment processes performed better in contaminant removal compared to secondary processes.

Interactions between soil microbial communities and agronomic behavior in a mandarin crop subjected to water deficit and irrigated with reclaimed water

J. Abadia et al.

Summary: Research shows that irrigation with water from different sources has significant impacts on soil microbial communities and crop yield in Mediterranean mandarin agroecosystems. Implementing water-saving irrigation strategies in citrus orchards can promote soil health and stabilize yield.

Occurrence, uptake, and health risk assessment of nonylphenol in soil-celery system simulating long-term reclaimed water irrigation

Yaqi Hu et al.

Summary: The study found that celery had limited enrichment capacity for nonylphenol (NP) and low residual rates of NP in the soil-celery system. Under long-term reclaimed water irrigation, human exposure to NP from celery and soil posed safe conditions with total noncancer hazard quotients (HQs) lower than the acceptable risk level.

Diversity and abundance of antibiotic resistance genes in rhizosphere soil and endophytes of leafy vegetables: Focusing on the effect of the vegetable species

Yajie Guo et al.

Summary: Analysis of endophytic antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in four leafy vegetables revealed significant effects of vegetable species on ARG diversity and abundance, with pak choi accumulating more ARGs in its microbiome. Bacterial community was identified as the primary factor shaping ARG profiles and correlated significantly with specific ARG subtypes. Shared ARGs and bacterial families across the vegetables, particularly in Proteobacteria, were also identified, emphasizing potential health risks associated with raw vegetable consumption.

Enteric virus in reclaimed water from treatment plants with different multi-barrier strategies: Trade-off assessment in treatment extent and risks

Andri Taruna Rachmadi et al.

Summary: This study monitored the enteric virus concentration in reclaimed water generated by two sewage treatment plants and found that membrane bioreactor technology can reduce virus concentrations. Risk assessment showed that reducing exposure frequency and/or adopting best management practices can reduce virus risks.

Aeromonas spp. diversity in US mid-Atlantic surface and reclaimed water, seasonal dynamics, virulence gene patterns and attachment to lettuce

Sultana Solaiman et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the distribution and characteristics of 331 Aeromonas spp. isolates, identifying A. veronii, A. hydrophila, and A. jandaei as predominant species across various water sources. Water type and season were found to affect species distribution, as well as the presence of different virulence genes in isolates.
