New insights into FeS/persulfate system for tetracycline elimination: Iron valence, homogeneous-heterogeneous reactions and degradation pathways

Jinhong Fan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that FeS/PS can remove complete tetracycline (TTC) and more than 50% of total organic carbon (TOC) within 30 minutes under optimized conditions. The degradation of TTC was found to be attributed to sulfate radicals (SO 4 -) and hydroxyl radicals ( OH). The research also provided insights into the mechanism of FeS-mediated PS activation and the role of homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions in the process.

Enhanced Oxidation of Organic Contaminants by Iron(II)-Activated Periodate: The Significance of High-Valent Iron-Oxo Species

Yang Zong et al.

Summary: Potassium periodate (PI, KIO4) can be activated by Fe(II) under acidic conditions to rapidly remove organic contaminants, generating high-valent iron-oxo species Fe(IV) and avoiding the formation of harmful iodine species. Isotope labeling techniques and X-ray absorption spectroscopy provided insights into the reaction mechanism of Fe(II)/PI process, enhancing our understanding of the efficient removal of emerging contaminants.

A review on treatment of membrane concentrates generated from landfill leachate treatment processes

Ramazan Keyikoglu et al.

Summary: Landfill leachate (LL) is a highly toxic wastewater containing various pollutants, and the integration of membrane technologies is essential for its treatment. While achieving high pollutant removal efficiency, the drawback of producing hazardous membrane concentrates remains a challenge. The review provides a detailed overview of methods for treating membrane concentrates and highlights the importance of engineered combinations of techniques for satisfactory removal efficiencies.

Treatment of old landfill leachate by persulfate enhanced electro-coagulation system: Improving organic matters removal and precipitates settling performance

Yang Deng et al.

Summary: In this study, a persulfate-enhanced electro-coagulation system (PECS) was constructed to improve the removal of COD and shorten the settling time of the flocculation precipitates. By using activated persulfate oxidation process, PECS can reduce the aromaticity and complexity of organic matter, generating small molecular-weight organic matter to alleviate the pressure of subsequent treatment of the leachate. The results suggest that PECS could improve the removal of organic matter, increase the COD removal, and shorten the separation time of precipitates under similar treatment costs to conventional processes.

Ozonation in view of micropollutant removal from biologically treated landfill leachate: Removal efficiency, •OH exposure, and surrogate-based monitoring

Yongyuan Yang et al.

Summary: This study found that ozonation can effectively remove some pollutants in landfill leachate, but is less effective for ozone-recalcitrant pollutants. A surrogate-based model was proposed for predicting pollutant removal using spectroscopic measurements.

Persulfate Oxidation of Sulfamethoxazole by Magnetic Iron-Char Composites via Nonradical Pathways: Fe(IV) Versus Surface-Mediated Electron Transfer

Jun Liang et al.

Summary: This study developed two efficient magnetic iron-char composites and investigated the efficacy of nonradical pathways for PS activation in degrading SMX. The BCFe-400/PS system showed high stability and efficiency in continuous degradation of SMX, while the BCFe-700/PS system displayed recovered reactivity after thermal treatment. Both systems exhibited high performances for SMX removal in various water matrices, highlighting the great merits of nonradical activation methods.

Fe-C micro-electrolysis-electrocoagulation based on BFDA in the pre-treatment of landfill leachate: Enhanced mechanism and electrode decay monitoring

Shu Fu et al.

Summary: The composite electrode using Fe-C micro-electrolysis and electrocoagulation showed higher removal rates of COD and NH4+-N in landfill leachate compared to the electrocoagulation system. The Fe-C micro-electrolysis mechanism involves the continuous supply of Fe2+ to enhance Fe3O4 formation and reduce harmfulness of the passivation layer. Through UTDR analysis, the best polarity reversal start time and polarity reversal operational time for the composite system were determined.
