Does FDI affect environmental degradation? Examining pollution haven and pollution halo hypotheses using ARDL modelling

Khalid M. Kisswani et al.

Summary: This paper empirically examines the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) on pollution (CO2 emissions) in four selected Asian countries. The findings support the pollution haven hypothesis (PHH) for the Philippines, while supporting the pollution halo hypothesis for Malaysia and Singapore. The paper also explores the causal relationship between FDI and pollution using the Vector Error Correction model (VECM), with mixed long- and short-run Granger causality findings.

A study on China's economic growth, green energy technology, and carbon emissions based on the Kuznets curve (EKC)

Yu Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between economic growth, solar energy technology, and carbon emissions, revealing a long-run cointegration relationship and an inverted U curve. Economic factors and solar technology innovation can negatively impact carbon emissions, while enhancing solar technology innovation has a positive effect on reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

Energy-environment-economy causal nexus in Pakistan: A graph theoretic approach

Rizwan Fazal et al.

Summary: The study found a unidirectional causality from economic growth to CO2 emissions in Pakistan, while no causality exists from energy consumption to economic growth and vice versa. This is due to a significant portion of energy consumption occurring in sectors that do not contribute to long-term economic growth.

Environmental implications of N-shaped environmental Kuznets curve for E7 countries

Bright Akwasi Gyamfi et al.

Summary: The study did not confirm the presence of an N-shaped EKC in the emerging 7 countries but rather found an inverted U-shaped EKC. Results showed a positive and significant relationship between renewable energy and non-renewable energy with CO2 emissions, but short-term results indicated no significant relationship between economic expansion and CO2 emissions. Causality tests revealed bi-directional causality between GDP and GDP-squared.

The dynamic nexus of energy consumption, international trade and economic growth in BRICS and ASEAN countries: A panel causality test

Mohammad Mafizur Rahman

Summary: This study examines the dynamic relationship of energy consumption, international trade, capital, and foreign direct investment (FDI) with economic growth in a panel of BRICS and ASEAN countries from 1990 to 2017. The results show positive and significant effects of these variables on economic growth, and both bidirectional and unidirectional causality relationships were identified among them.

Investigating the Causal Linkage Among Economic Growth, Energy Consumption and CO2 Emissions in Thailand: An Application of the Wavelet Coherence Approach

Tomiwa Sunday Adebayo et al.

Summary: The study explores the causal relationship between CO2 emissions, economic growth and energy consumption in Thailand using wavelet coherence, Granger causality and Toda-Yamamoto techniques. Findings show that changes in economic growth lead to changes in CO2 emissions, there is a bidirectional causality between CO2 emissions and energy consumption, and a positive correlation between CO2 emissions and energy usage, as well as between GDP growth and CO2 emissions in Thailand between 1971 and 2018. Policy recommendations include enhancing energy efficiency programs to reduce unnecessary energy waste.

Summary: The study found that clean energy consumption has a positive impact on economic growth and CO2 emissions have a negative impact on economic growth in BRICS countries. Furthermore, clean energy consumption significantly reduces CO2 emissions in these countries, and the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis is valid.
