Effect of wetting and drying cycles on the durability of bio-cemented soil of expressway slope

S. Gowthaman et al.

Summary: Cyclic wet-dry cycles have a significant impact on the mechanical properties of bio-cemented soil, leading to deterioration in both physical and mechanical characteristics. The deterioration occurs in two stages: a significant drop in mass and S-wave velocity in the early cycles, followed by a more notable deterioration between 30 and 50 cycles. Increasing the cementation level helps reduce the deterioration of bio-cemented soil under wet-dry cycles.

Application of enzymatic calcification for dust control and rainfall erosion resistance improvement

Xiaohao Sun et al.

Summary: This study utilized a combination of EICP and PVAc technologies to effectively control dust pollution on slopes. By optimizing the ratio of urease solution to cementation solution, the stability and erosion resistance of dust slopes were improved, resulting in reduced soil loss and stronger surface strength.

Theoretical quantification for cracks repair based on microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) method

Xiaohao Sun et al.

Summary: This study developed a theoretical calculation model with microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) to repair concrete cracks. The research found that the concentration of suspended biomass in cracks gradually decreased during the tests, while biofilm and solute concentrations were larger at the inlet, resulting in an increase in productive rates for CaCO3, indicating better repair effects. The proposed mathematical model represents a platform technology that utilizes microbial metabolism and repair period to impart novel multifunctionality to structural materials.
