Microbially-driven sulfur cycling microbial communities in different mangrove sediments

Mingyue Li et al.

Summary: Microbially-driven sulfur cycling is a critical biogeochemical process in sulfur-rich mangrove ecosystems. This study reveals the diversity, composition, and structure of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in mangrove sediments, highlighting the important role of temperature, redox potential, and key factors like elemental sulfur and total carbon in influencing these microbial communities. Additionally, the morphological transformation of sulfur compounds explains the variations in sulfur cycling microbial communities, with specific dominant genus identified in different mangrove species. These findings shed light on the sulfur cycling dynamics in mangrove ecosystems and offer insights for similar wetland ecosystems from a microbial perspective.

Interactions between heavy metals and bacteria in mangroves

Shanshan Meng et al.

Summary: Environmental heavy metal pollution has become a serious issue in recent years. A study on seven heavy metal-contaminated mangroves in southern China revealed that Zn and Pb were the major pollutants, with the Shenzhen mangrove being the most polluted and the Beihai mangrove the least. Bacterial communities in the mangroves showed significant correlations with heavy metal contamination, with certain bacteria like Pseudomonas and Burkholderia potentially useful for heavy metal remediation. Geo-Chip analyses also indicated the involvement of various functional genes in heavy metal transport, particularly for Ni.

Heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification characteristics and antibiotic resistance of two bacterial consortia from Marinomonas and Halomonas with effective nitrogen removal in mariculture wastewater

Fei Huang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the HNAD characteristics and antibiotic resistance of two bacterial consortia, MCH and MAH, and their single isolates. MCH and MAH showed greater efficiency of inorganic-N removal and preferred simultaneous HNAD in mixed N-source media. Both isolates and their consortia had high NH4+-N or NO2--N removal efficiency under optimal conditions, with consortia performing better under certain challenging conditions. Additionally, MCH and MAH exhibited higher NH4+-N removal efficiency and more stable cell quantity in real mariculture wastewater, indicating potential applications in reducing nitrogen pollution in saline environments.

Nitrogen removal from ammonium- and sulfate-rich wastewater in an upflow anaerobic sludge bed reactor: performance and microbial community structure

Yongli Qin et al.

Summary: The study focused on autotrophic ammonium removal by sulfate-dependent anaerobic ammonium oxidation (S-Anammox) process in an upflow anaerobic sludge bed reactor. The results suggest that the S-Anammox process played a dominant role in stage III, with the over-transformation of NH4+ potentially due to the cyclic regeneration of SO42-. The microbial characteristics showed enrichment of Anammox bacteria, sulfate-reducing bacteria, and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria in biomass without the addition of NO2-.

16S rRNA gene amplicon-based metagenomic analysis of bacterial communities in the rhizospheres of selected mangrove species from Mida Creek and Gazi Bay, Kenya

Edith M. Muwawa et al.

Summary: The vertical distribution and diversity of rhizosphere bacteria in Kenyan mangroves are influenced by geographical location, mangrove species, and sediment chemical parameters. Predicted functional profiling revealed that pathways for sulfur and carbon metabolism were significantly enriched in Gazi Bay compared to Mida Creek.

Desulfobacterales stimulates nitrate reduction in the mangrove ecosystem of a subtropical gulf

Shiqing Nie et al.

Summary: The mangrove ecosystem can efficiently alleviate nitrogen pollution, especially through nitrate reduction by Desulfobacterales. Nitrogen metabolism activities are significantly higher in the wet season compared to the dry season, with Desulfobacterales playing a key role in nitrogen cycling. Furthermore, environmental factors such as total phosphorus, available iron, and total organic carbon influence the distribution of nitrogen cycling genes.

Anthropogenic nutrient loads and season variability drive high atmospheric N2O fluxes in a fragmented mangrove system

N. Regina Hershey et al.

Summary: The study conducted in the Mangalavanam coastal wetland in Southern India revealed that fragmented mangroves are overlooked in N2O flux studies and can be significant contributors to the global N2O budget. The wetland was found to be a net source of N2O to the atmosphere, with fluxes varying between 17.5 to 117.9 mu mol m(-2) day(-1). Variations in N2O dynamics were driven by changes in rainfall, water column depth, salinity, dissolved oxygen, carbon, and substrate nitrogen, with the highest dissolved inorganic nitrogen inputs and N2O emissions occurring during the monsoon season.

Effects of tidal influence on the structure and function of prokaryotic communities in the sediments of a pristine Brazilian mangrove

Carolina Oliveira de Santana et al.

Summary: Microbial communities in different tidal zones of pristine mangroves exhibit significant diversity and distinct nutrient-cycling functions, influenced mainly by salinity and organic matter. Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Chloroflexi are the predominant bacterial phyla, while Crenarchaeota and Thaumarchaeota are the main archaeal phyla across all zones. Bacillaceae family plays a crucial role in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur cycling in the mangrove ecosystem.
