Acceleration of emergence of E. coli antibiotic resistance in a simulated sublethal concentration of copper and tetracycline co-contaminated environment

Jinmei Li et al.

Summary: The study found that a co-contaminated environment with metals and antibiotics could significantly increase bacteria's resistance to antibiotics, especially at high sublethal concentrations. Whole-genome characterization results indicated variability in genotype and phenotype involved in antibiotic resistance. Evolved resistant strains displayed hereditary resistance even after multiple culture cycles.

Double photoelectron-transfer mechanism in Ag AgCl/WO3/g-C3N4 photocatalyst with enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity for trimethoprim degradation

Gongduan Fan et al.

Summary: Antibiotic contamination is a growing concern, leading to increased scrutiny on solutions like the AgAgCl/WO3/g-C3N4 (AWC) nanocomposites for trimethoprim degradation. Experimental results showed high efficiency with 99.9% of TMP degraded within 60 min using AWC at 0.5 g/L concentration. The proposed double photoelectron-transfer mechanism and identification of degradation pathways through theoretical calculations and experiments further support AWC as a promising photocatalyst for removing TMP from aquatic environments.

Z-scheme α-Fe2O3/g-C3N4 with the Fe-OC-bond toward enhanced photocatalytic degradation

Qingbo Yu et al.

Summary: Efficient Z-scheme photocatalysts can be developed by enhancing electron transport ability of the interface through structural design. A Z-scheme alpha-Fe2O3/g-C3N4 photocatalyst with Fe-O-C bond was obtained using a genetic strategy, showing excellent photocatalytic and structural stability. The Fe-O-C bond expands visible light absorption, acts as an efficient electron transfer channel, and maintains the strong redox ability of the Z-scheme structure.

Summary: A series of BiOI/MIL-121(Al) hybrid photocatalysts were prepared by a facile hydrothermal method, showing good performance for the visible-light-driven degradation of tetracycline. The hydrogen bond induced by carboxyl in MIL-121 promotes tetracycline adsorption and photocatalytic degradation process. Photo-induced holes and superoxide radicals are identified as the main active species for the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline over BiOI/MIL-121 composites.

Response of antibiotic and heavy metal resistance genes to tetracyclines and copper in substrate-free hydroponic microcosms with Myriophyllum aquaticum

Xuan Guo et al.

Summary: Constructed wetlands are important reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and heavy metal resistance genes (MRGs). This study found that the presence of tetracyclines and copper in hydroponic microcosms led to an increase in the levels of resistant genes due to co-selection pressure. Reducing exogenous inputs of antibiotics/heavy metals and suspended solids in effluent is suggested for mitigating resistant genes in phytoremediation technologies.
