Extracellular adsorption, intracellular accumulation and tolerance mechanisms of Cyclotella sp. to Cr(VI) stress

Na Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the tolerance mechanisms of Cyclotella sp. to Cr(VI), revealing that the increase in antioxidant enzymes activity, detoxification by binding to functional groups on the cell surface, and accumulation of chromium in cells are important for its tolerance. Additionally, Cr(VI) had a growth stimulation effect at low concentrations but inhibited growth at high concentrations, causing changes in Chlorophyll a content and soluble protein levels, as well as alterations in cell ultrastructure. These findings shed light on the tolerance mechanism of Cr(VI) in microalgae and provide insights for assessing Cr(VI) toxicity.

Oxidative Stress and Antioxidant Metabolism under Adverse Environmental Conditions: a Review

Pedro Garcia-Caparros et al.

Summary: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are natural byproducts of oxygen metabolism, primarily generated in cell compartments such as the apoplast, mitochondria, chloroplasts, and peroxisomes. Cells have a balance between ROS generation and elimination, but this balance can be disrupted by various stress factors, leading to cellular damage. The antioxidant defense system in cells, composed of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, works together to scavenge ROS and plays a crucial role in plant immunity, growth, and development.

Performance of Chlorella Vulgaris Exposed to Heavy Metal Mixtures: Linking Measured Endpoints and Mechanisms

Nora Exposito et al.

Summary: The study found that Chlorella vulgaris was more sensitive to As, Zn, and Pb in growth inhibition tests, while Cu and Ni were more sensitive in photosynthesis inhibition tests. The effects on growth and photosynthesis were not related, and toxicity of a heavy metal is not solely determined by its speciation but also by other compounds and biological interactions. The study suggests that predictive mixture effect models tend to overestimate the effects of metal mixtures on C. vulgaris, and growth and photosynthesis inhibition tests provide complementary information as fast, cheap, and sensitive alternatives to animal testing. More research is needed to address the challenge of complex pollutant mixtures in natural environments, where microalgae-based assays could be useful monitoring tools for pollution management and regulatory purposes.

Summary: Fatty acids play a crucial role in biological processes, but their metabolism in microalgae, particularly in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, differs from animals and yeast. Recent studies on C. reinhardtii suggest that lipid turnover is mainly focused on recycling acyl chains within membranes rather than beta-oxidation for energy production. This preference for membrane turnover over beta-oxidation is highlighted through fluorescence microscopy analysis, which also reveals the detoxifying capability of the alga towards hydrogen peroxide produced during beta-oxidation.
