Pollution status and human health risk assessment of potentially toxic elements and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urban street dust of Tyumen city, Russia

Elizaveta Konstantinova et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pollution levels and sources of PTEs and PAHs in urban street dust in Tyumen city, Russia. The results showed that transportation is the main source of these elements, and some elements had higher concentrations compared to other large cities. The study also found that the pollution level of street dust is more closely related to the number of roadway lanes. The risks associated with exposure to Co, Ni, V, and As were found to be noncarcinogenic, with negligible risk for adults and moderate risk for children.

Heavy metals in urban dusts from Alexandria and Kafr El-Sheikh, Egypt: implications for human health

Waqar Azeem Jadoon et al.

Summary: The study found heavy metal contamination in dust samples from Alexandria and Kafr El-Sheikh cities, with high concentrations observed in areas characterized by anthropogenic activities and heavy traffic. Most metals showed moderate to high contamination levels, posing low to moderate ecological risks and significant health risks, especially for children.

Evaluation of factors influencing road dust loadings in a Latin American urban center

Jorge E. Pachon et al.

Summary: Vehicle non-exhaust emissions, including tire and brake wear, contribute significantly to particulate matter, with resuspended particle emissions potentially surpassing combustion emissions in urban areas. Factors affecting resuspended particle emissions are road characteristics, traffic conditions, land use, and meteorology. Managing land-use variables may be as crucial as traffic control and road maintenance in mitigating road dust. The study provides valuable data on dust loadings less than 10 micrometers in Latin America, offering insights into estimating resuspended particle emissions and highlighting the importance of various influencing factors.

Pollution evaluation, human health effect and tracing source of trace elements on road dust of Dhanbad, a highly polluted industrial coal belt of India

Shilpi Mondal et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pollution characteristics and health risks of road dust samples from five different land use zones in Dhanbad, identifying the sources of trace elements. The results showed higher concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, and Mn in mining areas, while Ni, Pb, and Zn were more prevalent in National Highway and busy traffic zones. Health risk assessment indicated potential non-carcinogenic risks from Cr, Fe, and Mn, as well as carcinogenic risks from Cd, Cr, and Ni. Principal Component Analysis and Pearson correlation suggested coal mining activities, coal-based industries, and heavy vehicular load as major sources of emission of these trace elements.

Influence of Highway Pavement on Metals in Road Dust: a Case Study in Houston, Texas

Matthew Fiala et al.

Summary: The elemental analysis of road dust can determine the contribution of traffic-related metal emissions to the environment. Pavement is the primary source of certain metals in road dust, with concrete contributing significantly to lead levels. Brake and tire wear remain the main concern in non-exhaust vehicle emissions.

Antimony from brake dust to the combined sewer collection system via road effluent under rainy conditions

H. Ozaki et al.

Summary: This study found that abrasion of brake lining in automobiles is a major source of antimony (Sb) on roads, leading to significantly higher Sb concentrations in sewer water during rainy weather. Results showed that Sb concentrations were higher in road effluent compared to other samples, and decreased in sewer water over time during a wash-off event.

Summary: This study focused on the precise determination of particle size distribution and compositional analysis of road dust in Delhi NCR. The findings indicated that road dust predominantly falls under the sand category, suitable for construction purposes. Uncertainty evaluation for PSD measurement was conducted, along with alternative strategies proposed for controlling road dust emissions.
