Environmental risk assessment of pharmaceuticals at a seasonal holiday destination in the largest freshwater shallow lake in Central Europe

Eva Molnar et al.

Summary: The presence of pharmacologically active compounds in surface waters poses high ecological risks, especially during peak tourist seasons. Concentration fluctuations of 42 PhACs in a freshwater lake in Central Europe have been found to significantly impact the environment, with dominant compounds like diclofenac, estrone, estradiol, and caffeine showing particularly high ecological risks.

Temporal dynamics and ecotoxicological risk assessment of personal care products, phthalate ester plasticizers, and organophosphorus flame retardants in water from Lake Victoria, Uganda

Florence Nantaba et al.

Summary: The study investigated the presence of 25 organic micropollutants in water samples from five bays in the Uganda sector of Lake Victoria, including personal care products, phthalate ester plasticizers, and organophosphorus flame retardants. Different concentrations of organic micropollutants were found in different bays, posing a high ecotoxic risk to aquatic organisms.

Phenolic compounds seasonal occurrence and risk assessment in surface and treated waters in Minas Gerais-Brazil

Ramatisa L. Ramos et al.

Summary: The study monitored the occurrence of phenolic compounds in a river and its treated water by a conventional water treatment plant in Minas Gerais, Brazil throughout a year. High levels of phenolic compounds were detected, with varying efficiency in removal by the treatment plant. The results indicated a significant risk to both environmental and human health.

Assessing the ecological risk of active principles used currently by freshwater fish farms

Claudia Alvarado-Flores et al.

Summary: The global aquaculture industry has experienced rapid growth with concerns over the use of veterinary drugs and their environmental impact. Ecological risk assessment of active principles used in fish farms in Chile and worldwide revealed that some active ingredients pose high risks, requiring further research to reduce exposure.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products in a Mediterranean coastal wetland: Impact of anthropogenic and spatial factors and environmental risk assessment

Daniele Sadutto et al.

Summary: The study focused on the occurrence, distribution, and risk assessment of 32 PPCPs in water, sediment, and soil in the Mediterranean coastal wetland Albufera Natural Park in Spain, as well as the influent and effluent of ten WWTPs. Results showed that certain PPCPs were detected at higher concentrations in the lake and channels, while only a few were found in the soil.

Censoring Trace-Level Environmental Data: Statistical Analysis Considerations to Limit Bias

Barbara Jane George et al.

Summary: The study found that after-censoring statistical approaches were superior to threshold/2 substitution in analyzing environmental data. All after-censoring approaches were found to be inferior to including all measurement data in analysis. Investigators should be cautious of censoring-related bias stemming from distributional and analysis approach decisions.

A review on the degradation efficiency, DBP formation, and toxicity variation in the UV/chlorine treatment of micropollutants

Yujin Yeom et al.

Summary: The UV/chlorine process is an emerging advanced oxidation treatment method that can effectively degrade refractory micropollutants, but may also lead to the formation of toxic transformation products and disinfection byproducts. Studies have shown that the toxicity variations of micropollutants in the UV/chlorine treatment are related to their compound-specific reactivity towards specific reactive species. Further research on the cost-effectiveness of the UV/chlorine process regarding micropollutant degradation without increasing associated toxicity is necessary.

Pharmaceuticals in two watersheds in Eastern China and their ecological risks

Jianfeng Tang et al.

Summary: Pharmaceutical pollution in aquatic ecosystems, influenced by human activities, was investigated in two watersheds in Eastern China. The study found higher pharmaceutical concentrations in urban watershed compared to peri-urban watershed, with variations between dry season and wet season. Urban and agricultural activities were identified as main factors contributing to pharmaceutical pollution.

How Much of the Total Organic Halogen and Developmental Toxicity of Chlorinated Drinking Water Might Be Attributed to Aromatic Halogenated DBPs?

Jiarui Han et al.

Summary: The study developed an effective method with ultraperformance liquid chromatography to analyze the DBP mixture from chlorination of bromide-rich raw water, separating them into aliphatic and aromatic fractions. The results showed that aromatic fractions accounted for a significant portion of the TOX and developmental toxicity in the original chlorinated water samples, indicating that the overall developmental toxicity of chlorinated water is mainly attributed to aromatic halo-DBPs with high bioconcentration potential.

Ecological and health risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Sungai Perak, Malaysia

Teh Sabariah Binti Abd Manan et al.

Summary: The research found low levels of PAHs contamination in Sungai Perak. Results of ecological and health risk assessments showed that the Hazard Index values for raw water were below one, indicating low risk, while treated water had values higher than one, suggesting high risk to aquatic organisms and human health. The Lifetime Cancer Risk values for both raw and treated water exceeded the maximum permissible limit, highlighting the inefficiency of conventional water treatment systems in removing PAHs and the need for restructuring or alternative water sources.

Predicted occurrence, ecotoxicological risk and environmentally acquired resistance of antiviral drugs associated with COVID-19 in environmental waters

Keisuke Kuroda et al.

Summary: Antiviral drugs used for treating COVID-19 patients can pose potential ecotoxicological risks in aquatic environments. Efforts are needed to improve the management and treatment of drug residues in wastewater to mitigate environmental impacts. While certain drugs may pose high risks to aquatic organisms, the likelihood of wild animals developing drug resistance is estimated to be low.

Ecotoxicological risk assessment of contaminants of emerging concern identified by suspect screening from urban wastewater treatment plant effluents at a territorial scale

Antoine Gosset et al.

Summary: This study conducted a territorial-scale ERA on CECs detected in the effluents of 10 WWTPs in a highly urbanized territory using LC-QToF-MS, focusing on pharmaceutical residue and pesticides. The results identified high risks for several CECs individually, with additional significant risks found in mixtures of CECs. The study highlighted the importance of assessing not only individual CECs but also their combined effects on ecotoxicological risks in urban streams.
