Estimation of Aromatic Secondary Organic Aerosol Using a Molecular Tracer-A Chemical Transport Model Assessment

Jie Zhang et al.

Summary: A modified community multiscale air quality model was used to assess the applicability of using DHOPA to estimate aromatic SOA in urban Shanghai during a three-week wintertime air quality campaign. The results showed a strong dependence of f(SOA) on OA loading and different partitioning behaviors of DHOPA in gas and particle phases. The model-derived f(SOA) value provided a constant scaling factor for assessing aromatic SOA in urban environments, independent of alternative estimates of DHOPA vapor pressures and SOA yields.

Importance of secondary organic aerosol formation of α-pinene, limonene, and m-cresol comparing day- and nighttime radical chemistry

Anke Mutzel et al.

Summary: The study investigated the oxidation reactions of alpha-pinene, limonene, and m-cresol under different relative humidity conditions and found that the SOA formation potential varied significantly depending on the reaction and humidity levels. Limonene showed a higher SOA yield with NO3 radicals under dry conditions, while m-cresol exhibited unexpectedly high SOA yields with OH radicals, particularly under elevated RH. Alpha-pinene, on the other hand, yielded consistent levels of SOA regardless of RH. Additionally, the chemical composition and markers of SOA were found to differ between the different compounds and reaction conditions.
