Cannabis Sativa L.: a comprehensive review on the analytical methodologies for cannabinoids and terpenes characterization

Giuseppe Micalizzi et al.

Summary: The global Cannabis Sativa market has attracted much attention in recent years due to the favorable regulatory framework. The interest in cannabis cultivation is mainly driven by the well-known pharmacological properties of cannabinoids and terpenes. This review discusses the most recently used analytical methodologies for detecting cannabinoids and terpenes, as well as established and innovative extraction protocols and chromatographic separations.

Cannabis and the Environment: What Science Tells Us and What We Still Need to Know

Ariani C. Wartenberg et al.

Summary: With the global trend of decriminalization and legalization of cannabis for medical or recreational use, understanding its environmental impacts has become crucial. However, limited peer-reviewed research on the environmental impacts of cannabis cultivation and consumption hinders the development of policies to minimize adverse outcomes. Further research, policy guidance, and collaboration with cannabis cultivators are needed to mitigate environmental risks in the growing global cannabis industry.

Summary and Overview of the Odour Regulations Worldwide

Anna Bokowa et al.

Summary: Odours are a major contributor to air pollution complaints, with significant variations in legislation between different countries. While some countries have detailed regulations on odour control, others do not specifically mention odour in their environmental legislation. The management of odour emissions, particularly from agricultural operations, is complex and requires a comprehensive approach to address sustainability and socio-economic considerations.

The greenhouse gas emissions of indoor cannabis production in the United States

Hailey M. Summers et al.

Summary: The legalization of cannabis has led to a significant increase in commercial production, but the environmental impact of the industry has not been fully quantified. Indoor cultivation of cannabis relies heavily on electricity and natural gas, resulting in substantial greenhouse gas emissions. A life cycle assessment across the United States shows the energy and material costs of indoor cannabis growing operations.

Identification of a New Family of Prenylated Volatile Sulfur Compounds in Cannabis Revealed by Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Gas Chromatography

Iain W. H. Oswald et al.

Summary: Research has revealed that the unique odor of cannabis is caused by a new family of volatile sulfur compounds, which is different from the traditionally believed terpenoids. These compounds increase significantly in concentration during the plant's growth and peak during curing, before dropping rapidly after storage for just one week.

Development and Evaluation of a Fluctuating Plume Model for Odor Impact Assessment

Marzio Invernizzi et al.

Summary: The presented dispersion model serves as a first approach for odor impact assessment, providing information on instantaneous concentration statistics. It was tested and found acceptable based on comparison with experimental data. While the simulated mean concentrations were accurate, the model tended to overestimate standard deviation and concentration intensity.

Mass spectral characterization of secondary organic aerosol from urban cooking and vehicular sources

Wenfei Zhu et al.

Summary: The study conducted experiments on secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from urban cooking and vehicular sources using a high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer. Results showed that cooking styles had a greater impact on aged COA mass spectra than oxidation conditions, while oxidation conditions significantly affected aged HOA spectra more than vehicle operating conditions. Mass spectra similarity analysis and positive matrix factorization were used to establish the POA and SOA mass spectra of these sources, and the improved ME-2 model better quantified the contribution of POA and SOA from cooking and vehicular sources compared to traditional ambient PMF results. This work established the vehicle and cooking SOA source profiles for the first time and can be further used in OA source apportionment in the ambient atmosphere.

A narrative review on environmental impacts of cannabis cultivation

Zhonghua Zheng et al.

Summary: Cannabis cultivation for medical and recreational use has significant environmental impacts, including water wastage, energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, soil erosion, and heavy metal absorption. Implementing technologies like precision irrigation and tools like life cycle analysis can help reduce these environmental damages.
