Formation of condensable organic vapors from anthropogenic and biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is strongly perturbed by NOx in eastern China

Yuliang Liu et al.

Summary: The study on OOMs in Nanjing, China reveals that they are influenced by various factors such as anthropogenic VOC daytime chemistry, isoprene-related factors, biogenic VOC nighttime chemistry, and nitrated phenols, with nitrogen-containing OOMs contributing the majority of the signals. Multi-nitrates, especially from isoprene, account for about 24% of the total signals. This highlights the importance of NOx in OOM formation in urban areas and the interactions between anthropogenic and biogenic emissions.

Highly oxygenated organic molecule (HOM) formation in the isoprene oxidation by NO3 radical

Defeng Zhao et al.

Summary: Highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOM) are important in the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA), with the reaction of isoprene with nitrate radical (NO3) leading to the formation of various HOM species, including monomers, dimers, and trimers through peroxy radicals and autoxidation. The study shows that second-generation products, such as 2N-monomers, play a dominant role in HOM formation, with different HOM showing distinct time profiles indicating multiple formation pathways and isomers. Total HOM molar yield in the reaction was estimated to be 1.2% (+1.3%)(-0.7%), suggesting a significant contribution of HOM to SOA yield.

Experimental and theoretical study on the impact of a nitrate group on the chemistry of alkoxy radicals

A. Novelli et al.

Summary: A study combining theoretical and experimental methods examined the chemistry of nitrated alkoxy radicals and their impact on RO2 measurements using the LIF technique. Results showed slower decomposition rates for beta-nitrate-alkoxy radicals compared to beta-OH-substituted alkoxy radicals, with implications for RO2 measurements in both ambient and experimental conditions. Experimental results confirmed the dominant role of NO3 radicals in alkene oxidation and the formation of HO2 and RO2 radicals, aligning with earlier literature data.
