Humidity-Dependent Viscosity of Secondary Organic Aerosol from Ozonolysis of β-Caryophyllene: Measurements, Predictions, and Implications

Adrian M. Maclean et al.

Summary: This study measured the viscosity of SOA generated from the ozonolysis of beta-caryophyllene as a function of relative humidity, showing significant differences in mixing timescales at different RH. Chemical composition of the SOA was determined using nano-desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and predicted viscosities overlapped with measured viscosities. The findings suggest that beta-caryophyllene SOA particles should be well-mixed under most conditions in the lower atmosphere.

Photolytic radical persistence due to anoxia in viscous aerosol particles

Peter A. Alpert et al.

Summary: Research shows that sunlight can induce stable reactive oxygen species and carbon-centered radicals in organic aerosol particles containing iron. Laboratory experiments demonstrate radical formation, release, as well as iron oxidation and mass loss in photoactive organic particles. The study suggests that fast radical reaction and slow diffusion near viscous organic particle surfaces can lead to oxygen depletion, radical trapping, and humidity-dependent oxidation.

Measurement report: PM2:5-bound nitrated aromatic compounds in Xi'an, Northwest China - seasonal variations and contributions to optical properties of brown carbon

Wei Yuan et al.

Summary: The study investigated the PM2.5-bound NACs in Xi'an, Northwest China, and found distinct seasonal variations in both concentrations and contributions of NACs. Different NAC species dominate in different seasons, indicating variations in emissions and formation pathways. Source apportionment results show large seasonal differences in the sources of NACs, with summer being influenced by secondary formation and vehicle emissions, while winter is dominated by biomass burning and coal combustion.
