Evaluation of Residues in Hen Eggs After Exposure of Laying Hens to Water Containing Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances

Timothy B. Wilson et al.

Summary: This study found a linear correlation between the PFAS concentrations in hen drinking water and those in eggs, allowing for estimation of egg PFAS concentrations from water concentrations. Exposure to PFAS concentrations below government limits is unlikely to result in egg PFAS levels exceeding the 10% limit set for human consumption.

Assessing the Ecological Risks of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances: Current State-of-the Science and a Proposed Path Forward

Summary: PFAS are a group of chemicals of potential concern to human health and the environment. Data on risks in either prospective or retrospective assessments are lacking for most PFAS. Cross-disciplinary approaches are needed to assess the ecological risk of PFAS.

Within- and Among-Clutch Variation of Yolk Perfluoroalkyl Acids in a Seabird from the Northern Adriatic Sea

Marco Parolini et al.

Summary: PFAS are found in the egg yolks of yellow-legged gulls in the northern Adriatic Sea, with perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) being the most abundant. There is substantial variation in PFAA levels among clutches, while the effects of laying order are weaker.

Suspect and Nontarget Screening Revealed Class-Specific Temporal Trends (2000-2017) of Poly- and Perfluoroalkyl Substances in St. Lawrence Beluga Whales

Holly Barrett et al.

Summary: The study investigated the temporal trends of PFASs in beluga whales from the St. Lawrence Estuary in Canada from 2000 to 2017, finding that certain legacy PFASs decreased while unregulated short-chain PFAS alternatives increased over time. Suspect and nontarget screening revealed class-specific temporal trends of PFASs, confirming continuous emissions of unregulated PFASs into the environment. The study also highlighted the higher concentrations of PFASs in newborns and juveniles compared to adults due to potential placental and lactational transfer.

PFAS Exposure Pathways for Humans and Wildlife: A Synthesis of Current Knowledge and Key Gaps in Understanding

Amila O. De Silva et al.

Summary: The understanding of human and wildlife exposures to PFAS has mainly focused on a few traditional substances, but there is a need for assessment of a wider range of new PFAS. Diet is a major pathway of human exposure to some PFAS, but there is significant variability across populations and compounds. Total fluorine data and information on unidentified organofluorine are essential, and water has been identified as a major exposure source in contaminated communities. As water sources are remediated, other sources of exposure such as dust, personal care products, and indoor environments may become more significant.

Correlations between Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances and Body Morphometrics in Fledgling Shearwaters Impacted by Plastic Consumption from a Remote Pacific Island

Drew Szabo et al.

Summary: The study found 55 types of PFASs in fledgling flesh-footed shearwaters and wedge-tailed shearwaters, with PFOS being the dominant compound. Long-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids were positively correlated with wing length and total body mass. While most individuals had plastic in their intestines, there was no correlation between PFAS concentrations and plastic mass.

Occurrence, profiles, and ecotoxicity of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances and their alternatives in global apex predators: A critical review

Yu Chen et al.

Summary: Certain PFASs show significant bioaccumulation/biomagnification behaviors in ecosystems, especially impacting apex predators. With global restrictions on legacy PFASs, the emergence of novel PFASs in apex predators has become a pressing issue. Future studies should focus on developing effective analytical methods and studying the toxicity and trophic transfer behavior of novel PFASs.

Long-term tracking of an Arctic-breeding seabird indicates high fidelity to pelagic wintering areas

Don-Jean Leandri-Breton et al.

Summary: Site fidelity in non-breeding movements of black-legged kittiwakes in the High Arctic was found to be driven by predictable resource distributions and individual memory. Spatial consistency was higher than temporal consistency, with some individuals displaying more flexibility in their movement patterns.

Contrasting long term temporal trends in perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in eggs of the northern gannet (Morus bassanus) from two UK colonies

Summary: The study found no significant differences in PFAS concentrations between different colonies of Northern gannets in the UK, but observed significant increases in PFSAs in the early stages followed by declines, and significant increases in PFCAs towards the end of the study. Most eggs contained residues of PFOS that exceeded suggested safe levels.

Summary: Avian eggs have been widely used as monitoring tools for PFAS contamination, providing important information on maternal exposure and risk assessment for birds. Future long-term monitoring of PFAS contamination using avian eggs is crucial for early identification and quantification of biomagnification trends.

Maternal transfer and occurrence of siloxanes, chlorinated paraffins, metals, PFAS and legacy POPs in herring gulls (Larus argentatus) of different urban influence

Nina C. Knudtzon et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of urbanization on ecological niches and contaminant concentrations in female herring gulls, finding higher concentrations of chlorinated paraffins and cyclic volatile methyl siloxane in the inner fjord colony. Conversely, per- and polyfluorinated substances concentrations were higher in the outer fjord colony, likely due to point source releases of pollutants.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and their alternatives in black-tailed gull (Larus crassirostris) eggs from South Korea islands during 2012?2018

Wenting Wang et al.

Summary: The study found significant temporal and spatial trends of PFAS and their alternatives in black-tailed gull eggs in South Korea from 2012 to 2018. There were increasing concentrations of PFOS, PFNA, and F-53B, indicating continuous presence of these substances in the Korean environment. Additionally, higher levels of F-53B were observed in HD and slightly higher concentrations of PFAS (<C11) were found in BLD.
