New-generation pesticides are prevalent in California's Central Coast streams

Mark W. Sandstrom et al.

Summary: Pesticides are commonly found in small streams in the Central California Coast region, with new-generation pesticides being the main compounds detected. Their toxicity mainly affects invertebrates, highlighting the need for continuous updating of analytical methods to fully assess their environmental impact.

Effects-Based Monitoring of Bioactive Chemicals Discharged to the Colorado River before and after a Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant Replacement

Jenna E. Cavallin et al.

Summary: The study found that before the WWTP replacement, ER, GR, and PPAR gamma bioactivities were detected at the WWTP outflow but diminished downstream. In March 2018, the WWTP effluent was acutely toxic to the fish due to elevated ammonia concentrations. Following the WWTP replacement, bioactivities were significantly reduced, no toxicity was observed in caged fish, and concentrations of many bioactive chemicals decreased.

Summary: The study in Minnesota revealed that neonicotinoid concentrations were highest in agricultural watersheds, followed by urban and undeveloped watersheds. Seasonal trends showed that neonicotinoid concentrations peaked during spring planting and increased streamflow in rivers and streams.

Pesticide residues in (treated) wastewater and products of Belgian vegetable- and potato processing companies

Akram Sayed et al.

Summary: Pesticide residues were found in wastewater from vegetable and potato processing companies, with conventional treatment techniques proving to be insufficient in removing them. New removal techniques are essential to meet the European potable water limit. However, pesticide residues in processed products were mostly below the maximum residue limit.

Neonicotinoid use on cereals and sugar beet is linked to continued low exposure risk in honeybees

Ben A. Woodcock et al.

Summary: The European Union instigated a moratorium on neonicotinoid seed treatments in 2013, but allowed their use on non-flowering crops like winter wheat. While clothianidin detection rates remained constant over three years, thiamethoxam residues disappeared and imidacloprid detection was infrequent but persistent. The highest neonicotinoid residues were associated with honey produced by foraging on oilseed rape and wild plants, leading to a full EU ban in 2018.

Inclusion of Pesticide Transformation Products Is Key to Estimating Pesticide Exposures and Effects in Small US Streams

Barbara J. Mahler et al.

Summary: Improved analytical methods have allowed the quantification of numerous pesticide transformation products in aquatic environments, yet there is limited understanding of their occurrence and potential toxicity. Through analyzing samples from 442 small streams in urban basins across the United States, it was found that transformation products were detected nearly as frequently as parent pesticides. Detection of these transformation products during baseflow conditions suggests chronic exposure of aquatic organisms and potential groundwater sources.

An Update on Wastewater Multi-Resistant Bacteria: Identification of Clinical Pathogens Such as Escherichia coli O25b:H4-B2-ST131-Producing CTX-M-15 ESBL and KPC-3 Carbapenemase-Producing Klebsiella oxytoca

Elsa Mesquita et al.

Summary: This study found that wastewater treatment plants are significant reservoirs of bacterial resistance, with clinically important bacteria such as KPC-3-producing K. oxytoca and for the first time, a CTX-M-15-producing Ochromobactrum intermedium, a human opportunistic pathogen, and a SED-1-producing Citrobacter farmeri, an uncommon CTX-M-type extended-spectrum beta-lactamase, identified in the influent and effluent.

A Comprehensive Statewide Spatiotemporal Stream Assessment of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in an Agricultural Region of the United States

Dana W. Kolpin et al.

Summary: Public concern over per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has increased in recent years, with research indicating multiple potential agricultural pathways for PFAS release. However, little research has been done on the environmental prevalence of PFAS in agricultural regions of the United States. A study conducted in Iowa found PFAS in 32% of stream sites sampled, with the highest concentrations found in effluent-affected streams receiving wastewater treatment plant discharge. No individual PFAS had an exposure:activity ratio (EAR) above 1.0, but five stream locations had at least one EAR above 0.001. Further temporal sampling is recommended to fully characterize PFAS prevalence in agricultural systems.

Comparison of detection limits estimated using single- and multi-concentration spike-based and blank-based procedures

William T. Foreman et al.

Summary: The study compared spike- and blank-based methods for estimating detection limits in water samples, finding that blank-based detection limits estimated using large numbers of blank samples provided results closer to the desired risk level. For organic methods, spike-based methods are needed to simulate blank distribution and estimate detection limits.
