A critical review on porous substrates of TFC polyamide membranes: Mechanisms, membrane performances, and future perspectives

Lu Elfa Peng et al.

Summary: Recent studies show that the performance of TFC membranes is significantly affected by their substrates, influencing the formation of polyamide rejection layers and regulating water and solute transport pathways. This comprehensive review evaluates the effects of substrate pore structure and chemistry on water permeance, selectivity, and fouling performance of TFC membranes, providing insights for future membrane development and optimization.

High Permeance or High Selectivity? Optimization of System-Scale Nanofiltration Performance Constrained by the Upper Bound

Zhe Yang et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the permeability and selectivity of nanofiltration membranes and establishes the upper bound for state-of-the-art NF separation properties. It also examines the system-scale performance in relation to the upper bound, considering factors such as product water quality, energy consumption, and system stability. The findings suggest that an optimized NF system requires a combination of moderate permeability and selectivity. This work provides critical guidelines for the future development and optimization of NF membranes and systems.

Enhanced removal of hydrophobic endocrine disrupting compounds from wastewater by nanofiltration membranes intercalated with hydrophilic MoS2 nanosheets: Role of surface properties and internal nanochannels

Ruobin Dai et al.

Summary: Introducing MoS2 nanosheets into PA NF membrane enhanced water permeance, EDC rejection, and water/EDC selectivity. The enhanced EDC rejection was due to suppressed hydrophobic interaction and selective effect by MoS2 nanosheets-induced nanochannels. Selective nanochannels played a more important role than hydrophilic surface in impeding the transport of EDCs across the PA layer.

Incorporating covalent organic framework nanosheets into polyamide membranes for efficient desalination

Niaz Ali Khan et al.

Summary: This study reported the fabrication of TFC membranes using covalent triazine framework nanosheets (CTN) as fillers, resulting in increased water flux and rejection rate, as well as improved hydrophilicity and anti-fouling properties. The approach may offer new insights for the research of thin film composite membranes and inspire the development of membrane materials in the future.

Interlayered Forward Osmosis Membranes with Ti3C2Tx MXene and Carbon Nanotubes for Enhanced Municipal Wastewater Concentration

Peng-Fei Sun et al.

Summary: This study developed a novel thin-film nanocomposite membrane (M/C-TFNi) with higher crosslinking and roughness, resulting in higher water flux and lower salt flux compared to traditional thin-film composite membranes. Additionally, it exhibited excellent concentration efficiency for real municipal wastewater and enhanced rejection of ammonia nitrogen, breaking the permeability-selectivity upper bound for FO membranes.

Nanoparticle-templated polyamide membranes for improved biofouling resistance

Naiara Mottim Justino et al.

Summary: Applying an interlayer of alumina nanoparticles during interfacial polymerization can reduce bacteria and protein adhesion on thin film composite membranes, showing improved antifouling properties. Low and medium Al-NP loadings were found to be more effective in reducing fouling compared to high Al-NP loading.
