Ambient PM2.5 and Related Health Impacts of Spontaneous Combustion of Coal and Coal Gangue

Summary: Coal and coal gangue spontaneous combustion (CGSC) results in significant environmental pollution globally, but its emissions are often underestimated in previous studies. The study in Wuhai, China, found that CGSC emissions contribute substantially to PM2.5 air pollution and related health impacts. Urgent control strategies and engineering techniques are needed to mitigate the impacts of CGSC on public health.

Rapidly changing coal-related city-level atmospheric mercury emissions and their driving forces

Summary: The study updated the atmospheric mercury emission inventory for 215 Chinese cities in 2015, finding significant variations in mercury emissions. Despite an increase in coal consumption across 50 cities, total emissions declined, largely due to energy structure adjustments and more efficient APCD installations. Key drivers of mercury mitigation strategies differed widely among cities.
