Food for Thought: Addressing Urban Food Security Risks through Urban Agriculture

Jorinda Steenkamp et al.

Summary: Food and nutrition security has been overlooked in planning, but with the increasing impacts of climate change on industrialized agriculture, there is a clear need to establish shorter, more sustainable agricultural production practices. Urban agriculture is proposed as a method for planners to support sustainable food production.

Stabilisation wedges: measuring progress towards transforming the global energy and land use systems

Nathan Johnson et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that progress has been made in global decarbonisation efforts, but more effort is needed. Significant advancements have been made in some areas, while negligible or negative progress has been observed in others.

Self-sufficiency through urban agriculture: Nice idea or plausible reality?*

I. V. Hume et al.

Summary: This paper provides new insights into the potential for food production within residential properties in low-density cities, using Adelaide (Australia) as a case study. It demonstrates the plausible reality of achieving household self-sufficiency through backyard vegetable production, but also notes a decrease in potentially productive land over time.

The influence of particle size on the potential of enhanced basalt weathering for carbon dioxide removal -Insights from a regional assessment

Thomas Rinder et al.

Summary: The study investigates the feasibility of using basalt-enhanced weathering for carbon sequestration on agricultural land. It finds that the effectiveness of this method is dependent on using particle sizes smaller than 10 μm. If implemented on a large scale with particles of this size, it could potentially remove about 2% of Austria's annual greenhouse gas emissions, but challenges such as the energy requirements for grinding and uncertainties in field weathering rates still need to be addressed through further research.

An assessment of urban horticultural soil quality in the United Kingdom and its contribution to carbon storage

Miriam C. Dobson et al.

Summary: This study is the first national-scale assessment of soil quality in allotments in the UK, revealing that allotment soil quality is generally high and unlike conventional horticulture, does not degrade soil quality but contributes to national carbon storage.
