Evaluation of the Reliability of Tropical Cyclone Data Using ENSO

Summary: This study quantitatively evaluated the reliability of tropical cyclone genesis frequency data in the western North Pacific under climate variability, identifying 1985 as the period with the most reliable data. Early unreliability was primarily related to technical difficulties, and these results will reduce uncertainty in TC data and aid in detecting a more solid relationship between TCs and climate variability in future studies.

Characterizing the highest tropical cyclone frequency in the Western North Pacific since 1984

Summary: The 2018 boreal summer in the Western North Pacific was marked by a record high number of tropical cyclones, which was attributed to the simultaneous highest recorded intensity of the summer monsoon. This led to the eastward extension of the monsoon trough and enhancement of tropical convective activities, contributing to the extreme TC frequency record. Furthermore, the increase in TC frequency and the intensity of the summer monsoon were both linked to anomalous westerlies originating from cold tropical Indian Ocean SST anomalies towards convective heat sources.
