Occupational exposure to whole body vibrations and birth outcomes - A nationwide cohort study of Swedish women

H. Skroder et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occupational whole body vibrations (WBV) exposure and its association with preterm birth, low birth weight, and small-for-gestational age in pregnant women. The results indicated that WBV exposure was associated with an increased risk of preterm birth, but not with small-for-gestational age. The study suggests that current exposure guidelines may not be adequate to protect pregnant women with continuous exposure.

Long-term exposure to air-pollution and COVID-19 mortality in England: A hierarchical spatial analysis

Garyfallos Konstantinoudis et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown a potential link between long-term exposure to NO2 and PM2.5 and an increased risk of COVID-19 mortality. After adjusting for confounding and spatial autocorrelation, there was a 0.5% increase in COVID-19 mortality risk for every 1 μg/m(3) increase in NO2 and a 1.4% increase for PM2.5. The spatial relative risk at LSOA level revealed strong patterns, which may reflect the spread of the disease during the initial wave of the epidemic.

Comparison of associations between mortality and air pollution exposure estimated with a hybrid, a land-use regression and a dispersion model

Jochem O. Klompmaker et al.

Summary: This study evaluated associations of air pollution exposure with natural cause and cause-specific mortality based on different exposure assessment methods. The results showed that air pollution was positively associated with respiratory disease and lung cancer mortality, with variations in the strength of associations among the different exposure models.

Trimester effects of source-specific PM10 on birth weight outcomes in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC)

Yingxin Chen et al.

Summary: Evidence suggests that exposure to PM10, particularly from traffic sources, during pregnancy is associated with reduced birth weight, with the greatest effect in the third trimester. The study also found significant associations between total PM10 exposure in the third trimester and term low birth weight as well as small for gestational age.

Ozone-induced changes in oxidative stress parameters in brain regions of adult, middle-age, and senescent Brown Norway rats

Prasada Rao S. Kodavanti et al.

Summary: The study found that exposure to ozone in elderly rats leads to an increase in oxidative stress in certain brain regions and has a negative impact on horizontal motor activity. Rats of different age groups respond differently to ozone, with younger rats showing more pronounced effects, especially in terms of horizontal motor activity.

A comparative study of the disease burden attributable to PM2.5 in China, Japan and South Korea from 1990 to 2017

Jianqiang Du et al.

Summary: The study showed significant differences in the disease burden attributable to PM2.5 in China, Japan, and South Korea from 1990 to 2017, with China having the highest burden. The declines in mortality rate and disability-adjusted life years were more pronounced in Japan and South Korea compared to China during this period.

Ambient air pollution exposure during the late gestational period is linked with lower placental iodine load in a Belgian birth cohort

Kristof Y. Neven et al.

Summary: The study found that maternal exposure to PM2.5 may lead to changes in placental iodine load, while NO2 or black carbon were not associated with placental iodine concentrations. The results suggest that the effect of air pollution on placental iodine concentration is gestational-week specific.

Associations between weekly air pollution exposure and congenital heart disease

Summary: The study found that exposure to air pollutants can increase the risk of congenital heart diseases (CHDs), with the most crucial susceptibility windows during the second and third trimesters. Boys seem to be more sensitive to air pollution.
