Limited dispersal of riverine litter onto nearby beaches during rainfall events

Peter G. Ryan et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the majority of litter near river mouths tends to strand close to the mouth, with rain events causing litter loads to peak and subsequent flushing reducing litter amounts on the beach. However, litter loads within coastal wetlands remained high. The research also showed that a significant amount of floating litter carried by small rivers washes ashore shortly after entering the sea, highlighting the need for beach clean-ups around river mouths to reduce plastic leakage into the ocean.

Riverine plastic pollution from fisheries: Insights from the Ganges River system

Sarah E. Nelms et al.

Summary: This study investigated fishing gear-related debris in the Ganges river catchment and found that abandoned fishing gear density increases closer to the sea. The research also revealed that plastic was the main material, illegal gear types and restricted net mesh sizes were present, and fisher communities lacked proper disposal methods and effective regulations. Threat assessment identified endangered species most at risk from entanglement in derelict fishing gear. The study suggests targeted interventions are needed to reduce fisheries-related plastic pollution in major rivers globally.

Schoolchildren discover hotspots of floating plastic litter in rivers using a large-scale collaborative approach☆

Tim Kiessling et al.

Summary: The study found a significant amount of floating macroplastics and meso-/microplastics in rivers in Germany, with some hotspots potentially linked to plastic-producing industries, wastewater treatment plants, weirs, and residential areas. The identification of litter hotspots could lead to targeted mitigation measures to prevent further pollution.

Human Population Density is a Poor Predictor of Debris in the Environment

Qamar Schuyler et al.

Summary: This study evaluated various factors influencing plastic leakage into the environment using data from different countries/territories and found that population density is not the best predictor of plastic leakage. Factors such as land use, infrastructure, socio-economics, and site-level variables were more strongly correlated with plastic in the environment.
