Salinization of Alpine rivers during winter months

Georg H. Niedrist et al.

Summary: Human-induced salinization, particularly from deicing road salt in Alpine rivers, can significantly impact aquatic biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, especially leading to peak salinity levels in late winter/early spring. Small rivers highly connected to urban infrastructures are more prone to considerable salinity peaks during late winter/early spring, which may have potential consequences on ecosystem functioning and require management practices to prevent degradation.

Calcium chloride pollution mitigates the negative effects of an invasive clam

Kayla D. Coldsnow et al.

Summary: The study found that invasive bivalves decrease phytoplankton, leading to reductions in periphyton, zooplankton, and native clams, but increases in filamentous algae and isopods. Moderate concentrations of CaCl2 significantly reduced Asian clams, and the highest CaCl2 treatments also decreased zooplankton densities. While freshwater salinization poses a concern, there is no evidence that CaCl2 road salt benefits Asian clams and zebra mussels.

The Relative Toxicity of Road Salt Alternatives to Freshwater Mussels; Examining the Potential Risk of Eco-Friendly De-icing Products to Sensitive Aquatic Species

Patricia Leigh Gillis et al.

Summary: The research found that on a per volume basis, beet juice products were significantly more toxic than brine, and the toxicity of beet juice did not correspond with chloride concentration. The toxicity of beet juice products aligned with glochidia potassium EC50s, indicating that beet juice deicing products could pose a greater hazard to early life stage mussels.
