Risk assessment for sediment associated heavy metals using sediment quality guidelines modified by sediment properties

Yanfeng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study modified the risk quotient and SQG values with sediment properties, finding that risk quotients modified with TOC and AVS showed significantly improved relationship with toxicity. This suggests that this method is promising for assessing ecological risks of metal contaminants in sediments.

Integrative assessment of the ecological risk of heavy metals in a South American estuary under human pressures

Daniela M. Truchet et al.

Summary: Monitoring heavy metal pollution through biochemical biomarkers can be challenging due to physiological changes in organisms caused by natural factors and anthropogenic pressures. A study in the Southwest Atlantic Ocean assessed heavy metal concentrations in sediments and crab species, revealing low to moderate pollution levels. Biomarkers were not effective in assessing spatial pollution, potentially influenced more by physiological seasonal variations than anthropogenic constraints.

Heavy metal pollution, ecological risk, spatial distribution, and source identification in sediments of the Lijiang River, China

He Xiao et al.

Summary: This study collected 61 sediment samples along the Lijiang River to analyze pollution levels and ecological risks. The results showed high concentrations of Cd, Hg, Zn, and Pb in the river sediments, with the midstream area being the most polluted and posing a higher potential ecological risk, primarily due to urbanization and agricultural activities.

Distribution and partitioning of heavy metals in water and sediments of typical estuary (Modaomen, South China): The effect of water density stratification associated with salinity

Zhenzhen Jia et al.

Summary: The study found significant salinity variations in the Modaomen estuary, with higher heavy metal concentrations in bottom water likely due to elevated salinity and water stratification causing restricted mixing. Sediment heavy metal distribution was influenced by various factors, with internal release potentially contributing significantly to higher levels in bottom water. Saltwater intrusion facilitated the mobility and repartitioning of metals in the estuarine ecosystem.

Geochemical distribution of heavy metal elements and potential ecological risk assessment of Matsushima Bay sediments during 2012-2016

Yuki Ota et al.

Summary: The study on heavy metal pollution in Matsushima Bay, Japan, revealed that the accumulation of heavy metals in marine sediments was influenced by multiple factors such as mega-tsunami, anthropogenic activities, and redox conditions. Different levels of enrichment of various heavy metals were found in sediments at different years and locations, highlighting the complexity of heavy metal contamination in coastal areas.

Heavy metal pollution assessment in coastal sediments and bioaccumulation on seagrass (Enhalus acoroides) of Palau

Hyeryeong Jeong et al.

Summary: The study showed that heavy metals in coastal sediments and seagrass mainly come from natural sources, with As and Hg posing the highest ecological risk. The concentrations of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Hg were higher in leaves of E. acoroides than in roots, and Zn, Cd, and Hg had high bioconcentration factors.

Health risk assessment based on source identification of heavy metals: A case study of Beiyun River, China

Huihui Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, Beiyun River was used as an example to quantitatively identify pollution sources and assess pollution source-oriented health risks related to heavy metals. The results showed that heavy metal pollution in the midstream and downstream of Beiyun River is more serious, with arsenic and nickel posing serious health risks to local residents. Industrial activities were identified as the largest contributor to heavy metal pollution in Beiyun River. The findings provide important insights for the precise control of pollution sources to improve water environment management in the basin.

Source apportionment of heavy metals in sediments and soils in an interconnected river-soil system based on a composite fingerprint screening approach

Ruihui Chen et al.

Summary: Heavy metal pollution is a global concern due to urbanization and industrialization. This study accurately identifies sources of heavy metals using machine classification and screening methods, with results showing that printing and dyeing, chemical, electroplating, and metal processing are the main sources in the studied area.
