Alkyltrimethylammonium (ATMA) surfactants as cyanocides - Effects on photosynthesis and growth of cyanobacteria

Xingqiang Wu et al.

Summary: Alkyl-trimethylammonium (ATMA) surfactants, such as octadecyltrimethylammonium (ODTMA) bromide, act as cyanocides that efficiently inhibit cyanobacteria growth, with green algae being less affected by these compounds.

Acute cadmium toxicity and post-stress recovery: Insights into coordinated and integrated response/recovery strategies of Anabaena sp. PCC 7120

Akanksha Srivastava et al.

Summary: The study revealed that acute Cd stress induced Cd accumulation and ROS production in Anabaena cells, leading to reduced photosynthetic efficiency. During post-stress recovery, Anabaena reprogrammed the expression pattern of proteins/genes involved in cellular defense and repair in a coordinated manner, facilitating detoxification of Cd and repair of cellular damage.

Light modulates the effect of antibiotic norfloxacin on photosynthetic processes of Microcystis aeruginosa

Libin Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that norfloxacin significantly affects the photosynthetic process of Microcystis aeruginosa, especially under high light conditions; Norfloxacin not only damages the reaction centers of PSII, but also inhibits energy transfer among Microcystis aeruginosa; Additionally, norfloxacin increases the content of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in Microcystis aeruginosa.

Biocide-tolerance and antibiotic-resistance in community environments and risk of direct transfers to humans: Unintended consequences of community-wide surface disinfecting during COVID-19?

Bo Chen et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that the persistent use of chemical disinfectants during COVID-19 may lead to the growth of biocide tolerant and antibiotic-resistant bacteria on common touch surfaces, posing risks of direct transmission to humans in public settings. It is important to address these risks and implement strategies to mitigate them effectively.

Biological removal of benzalkonium chlorides from wastewater by immobilized cells of Pseudomonas sp. BIOMIG1 in an up-flow packed bed reactor

Fahri Koray Sakarya et al.

Summary: Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are key components in disinfectants used to combat the spread of SARS-CoV-2. This study demonstrates that a biocatalyst entrapped in calcium alginate beads can effectively degrade QACs, offering a cost-effective and robust treatment option for wastewater systems.

Potassium regulates cadmium toxicity in Microcystis aeruginosa

Yixin He et al.

Summary: The availability of potassium (K+) was found to positively influence the toxicity of cadmium (Cd2+) to Microcystis aeruginosa. Higher K+ levels led to increased Cd2+ assimilation and retention on the algal surface, as well as up-regulation of Cd2+ transporting proteins and down-regulation of Cd2+ efflux proteins. These findings indicate a potential for enhanced Cd2+ removal using algal-based technology.
