Lifelong exposure to air pollution and greenness in relation to asthma, rhinitis and lung function in adulthood

Ingrid Nordeide Kuiper et al.

Summary: The study found that childhood, adolescence, and adult exposure to air pollution were associated with an increased risk of asthma attacks, rhinitis, and low lung function in adulthood. Greenness was not associated with asthma or rhinitis, but was a risk factor for decreased lung function.

Neighbourhood green and blue spaces and allergic sensitization in children: A longitudinal study based on repeated measures from the Generation XXI cohort

Ines Paciencia et al.

Summary: Limited and inconsistent evidence on the effect of natural environments on atopy in children disregards time-varying and cumulative exposures. A longitudinal study of 730 children in Portugal found that residing in neighborhoods with more vegetation at 10 years and lifetime exposure to higher levels of NDVI were associated with a lower risk of allergic sensitization. These findings support the role of longitudinal exposure to green spaces, particularly in late childhood, in preventing allergic sensitization in children.

Association between the density and type of trees around urban schools and exhaled nitric oxide levels in schoolchildren

I Paciencia et al.

Summary: The presence of greenspaces and tree density around schools is significantly associated with exhaled Nitric Oxide levels in schoolchildren, with non-tree covered areas showing a negative correlation with NO levels in children. This suggests that trees in school neighborhoods may have a role in the biological mechanisms linking environment and airway inflammation.
