Aggregation and stability of sulfate-modified polystyrene nanoplastics in synthetic and natural waters

Junyu Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the aggregation and stability of polystyrene (PS) nanoparticles under different hydrochemical conditions. The presence of natural organic matter (NOM) was found to be the most significant factor affecting NP aggregation in waters with high ionic strength and NOM content. PS NPs were highly suspended in all freshwaters and wastewater, while they aggregated rapidly and deposited in seawater.

Polystyrene nanoplastic induces oxidative stress, immune defense, and glycometabolism change in Daphnia pulex: Application of transcriptome profiling in risk assessment of nanoplastics

Zhiquan Liu et al.

Summary: This study used global transcriptome sequencing to investigate the impact of nanoplastic exposure on gene expression levels in Daphnia neonates, revealing key genes associated with oxidative stress, immune defense, and glycometabolism. Daphnia provides some molecular insights into nanoplastic toxicity, but further research on differentially expressed genes is needed to better understand the underlying mechanisms.

Waterborne exposure of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) to polymethylmethacrylate nanoplastics causes effects at cellular and molecular levels

I. Brandts et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the short-term exposure of 45 nm PMMANPs on gilthead seabream by analyzing biomarkers in liver and plasma. The results showed an up-regulation of genes associated with lipid metabolism, an increase in cholesterol and triglycerides in plasma, and activation of antioxidant defenses. After 96 hours, the antioxidant capacity decreased and genotoxicity in blood cells was observed.
