Nitrogen cycling microbiomes are structured by plant mycorrhizal associations with consequences for nitrogen oxide fluxes in forests

Ryan M. Mushinski et al.

Summary: The study found that soil microbial communities involved in nitrogen cycling are significantly influenced by the composition of overstory trees in temperate forests. Trees associating with different types of fungi have different impacts on the N-cycle potential and activity of soil microbial communities. In addition, there is a linear decrease in volatile reactive nitrogen gas flux with increasing abundance of ectomycorrhizal trees.

Global terrestrial water storage and drought severity under climate change

Yadu Pokhrel et al.

Summary: Using ensemble hydrological simulations, it is found that climate change could reduce TWS in many regions, especially in the Southern Hemisphere. The decline in TWS translates to an increase in future droughts, highlighting the need for climate change mitigation and improved water resource management and adaptation. By the late twenty-first century, the global land area and population in extreme-to-exceptional TWS drought could more than double.

Impact of climate change on soil nitric oxide and nitrous oxide emissions from typical land uses in Scotland

S. Medinets et al.

Summary: The study simulated soil emissions of NO and N2O from typical land uses in Lowland and Highland Scotland under climate change conditions. Results showed that natural moorlands with high NH3 deposition rates were the main sources of NO emissions. As combustion sources of NO (x) decrease, the impact of soil NO emissions is likely to increase.

The underappreciated role of agricultural soil nitrogen oxide emissions in ozone pollution regulation in North China

Summary: The study reveals that soil emissions of nitrogen oxides in the North China Plain significantly impact the sensitivity of ozone pollution to anthropogenic emissions, suggesting that additional measures beyond reducing combustion emissions are needed to effectively mitigate ozone pollution.
