Confounding by Socioeconomic Status in Epidemiological Studies of Air Pollution and Health: Challenges and Opportunities

Anjum Hajat et al.

Summary: Despite a vast air pollution epidemiology literature, there is little research on optimal means of adjusting for confounding by socioeconomic status (SES) in air pollution epidemiology. This study aims to provide a conceptualization of SES, review approaches to its measurement, and discuss pathways by which SES may influence health and confound effects of air pollution. Multiple facets of SES should be examined in studies and statistical approaches can help reduce bias and confounding in air pollution epidemiology.
