Phytoavailability and human risk assessment of heavy metals in soils and food crops around Sutlej river, India

Raj Setia et al.

Summary: The study assessed the phytoavailability of heavy metals in wheat and rice grown along the flood plains of the Sutlej river in India, finding higher concentrations of DTPA-extractable metals in pre-monsoon season than post-monsoon season. Some metals in wheat and rice grains exceeded safe limits, with higher carcinogenic risks and pollution load index for Cd. Exchangeable and non-exchangeable fractions significantly contributed to metal uptake by plants, indicating potential health risks for human consumption.

Speciation, contamination, ecological and human health risks assessment of heavy metals in soils dumped with municipal solid wastes

Nihal Gujre et al.

Summary: The study aimed to assess soil contamination, ecological and health risks associated with municipal solid waste disposal near a Ramsar site in Assam, India. Heavy metals including chromium, manganese, and zinc were analyzed, with chromium showing higher contamination levels. Speciation analysis revealed different associations with soil fractions for each metal, with chromium posing higher health risks through ingestion.

An integrated exploration on health risk assessment quantification of potentially hazardous elements in soils from the perspective of sources

Hui-Hao Jiang et al.

Summary: The study assessed soil pollution of potentially hazardous elements using regional geochemical baseline concentrations, showing varying levels of pollution across different land types. Analysis identified industrial activities, natural sources, agricultural practices, and traffic emissions as major sources of potentially hazardous elements. Different land types had different primary sources of health risks, with agricultural practices and industrial activities being the main sources under different conditions.

Status and environmental management of soil mercury pollution in China: A review

Sijia Liu et al.

Summary: Mercury pollution in soil in China, especially around mines and industrial areas, is a serious issue. The highest mercury content is found in the soil around the Tongren mercury mine in Guizhou Province and thermometer factories. China has developed solidification and stabilization technology to repair mercury-contaminated soil and plans to study more effective stabilizer materials and select mercury-rich plants in the future. China has also established various policies and regulations to manage mercury pollution but still faces challenges in soil remediation technology and environmental management systems.

Lead smelting alters wheat flour heavy metal concentrations and health risks

Liping Li et al.

Summary: The study found that wheat products grown in areas polluted by lead contain heavy metals such as Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn, with the highest Pb concentration in whole wheat flour; children have higher hazard quotients for consuming whole wheat flour and wheat flour compared to adults.

Investigation on trace metal speciation and distribution in the Scheldt estuary

Camille Gaulier et al.

Summary: This study investigated the biogeochemical behavior of Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni and Pb along the Scheldt estuary, highlighting the variations of trace metal speciation and distribution. The mobility and partitioning of trace metals were mainly driven by biogeochemical reactions influenced by estuarine physicochemical parameters. The study confirmed decreasing trend for particulate metals and rising concentrations for dissolved trace metals along the Scheldt.

Quantitative source apportionment, risk assessment and distribution of heavy metals in agricultural soils from southern Shandong Peninsula of China

Haiwei Liu et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the levels of heavy metals in soil samples from a tobacco growing region in Shandong Peninsula, China, and identified Cd and Hg accumulations as posing ecological risks, while Cr and Ni levels presented a carcinogenic health risk to humans. The sources of heavy metals in the soils were mainly attributed to natural sources, coal combustion, agricultural practices, and industrial activities.

Mohsen Heidari et al.

Summary: The main sources of heavy metal pollution in road dust of urban and suburban areas are lithogenic sources and traffic emissions, with industrial/construction activities contributing significantly to ecological risk. Health risks in suburban areas are mainly attributed to traffic emissions, especially for arsenic cancer risk.

Distribution, sources, and ecological risks of potentially toxic elements in the Laizhou Bay, Bohai Sea: Under the long-term impact of the Yellow River input

Pan Dang et al.

Summary: The study found that the concentrations of PTEs in sediments decreased from the Yellow River Estuary to the inner Laizhou Bay due to the long-term impact of the Yellow River. Three potential sources were identified through principal component analysis: natural origins, coastal anthropogenic activities, and marine production. Among the PTEs, Cd was the most significant contaminant and was also the most sensitive factor in evaluating ecological risk.

Cafer Mert Yesilkanat et al.

Summary: This study investigated the concentrations of toxic heavy metals in dust samples from the Black Sea coastal road in northern Turkey and evaluated the environmental pollution risk levels. Higher levels of environmental pollution were found in Samsun, Ordu, and Artvin provinces compared to other provinces in the study area, with notable potential ecological risks associated with metals such as Cu, Pb, and Cd. The health risks of toxic heavy metals in road dust for adults and children were found to be within acceptable ranges, with negligible noncarcinogenic health risks and lower cancer risk levels.
