Win by Quantity: a StrikingRickettsia-Bias Symbiont Community Revealed by Seasonal Tracking in the WhiteflyBemisia tabaci

Dongxiao Zhao et al.

Summary: Maintaining adaptive seasonality is crucial for cold-blooded insects harboring various symbionts, yet how these symbionts coordinate within insects is still unknown. This study found that the whitefly Bemisia tabaci in China carries obligatory symbiont Portiera, as well as facultative symbionts including Hamiltonella, Rickettsia, and Cardinium. Different symbionts show varying infection frequencies in whitefly populations throughout the seasons, with Rickettsia consistently dominating the symbiont community. The presence of multiple symbionts in whitefly individuals suggests complex interactions and potential effects on host plant use.

Transitions in symbiosis: evidence for environmental acquisition and social transmission within a clade of heritable symbionts

Georgia C. Drew et al.

Summary: This study describes a symbiosis between a member of the genus Arsenophonus and the Western honey bee. While the symbiont shares common genomic properties with Arsenophonus nasoniae, evidence suggests that the bee Arsenophonus deviates from a heritable transmission model, with evidence of horizontal transmission between bees.
