Ways to control harmful biofilms: prevention, inhibition, and eradication

Wen Yin et al.

Summary: Biofilms are complex microbial architectures that provide microorganisms with enhanced resistance against hostile environments. Harmful biofilms pose threats to food safety, plant and animal health, and medical fields, urging the development of effective control strategies. This review discusses various strategies to control biofilm formation, hoping to inspire innovative and effective approaches for managing harmful biofilms.

Approaches for characterizing and tracking hospital-associated multidrug-resistant bacteria

Kevin S. Blake et al.

Summary: Hospital-associated infections, especially those caused by antibiotic-resistant pathogens, remain a major concern for global public health. Despite extensive sanitization efforts, the hospital environment continues to serve as a significant reservoir and vector for antibiotic-resistant organisms. Advances in next-generation sequencing have provided new insights into the population dynamics of hospital-associated microbiota and the transmission networks of pathogens.

Endophytic Lifestyle of Global Clones of Extended-Spectrum beta-Lactamase-Producing Priority Pathogens in Fresh Vegetables: a Trojan Horse Strategy Favoring Human Colonization?

Ralf Lopes et al.

Summary: The study identified high-risk clones of ESBL-producing E. coli and K. pneumoniae in fresh vegetables sold in a high ESBL endemic country, showing resistance to clinically relevant antibiotics. These endophytic isolates have the ability to colonize plant tissues and demonstrate a multidrug-resistant profile.

'Viable but non-culturable cells' are dead

Sooyeon Song et al.

Summary: Most bacteria enter sleep mode to survive stress, while a small portion of cells become dormant in response to continued stress. Under prolonged pressure, these cells become spheroid and eventually die, forming hollow, membrane-enclosed structures. The process through which cell content is lost remains unclear, but there is debate among scientists regarding whether these dead cell husks can be reborn.

The global dissemination of hospital clones of Enterococcus faecium

Sebastiaan J. van Hal et al.

Summary: The study found that Enterococcus faecium A1 group evolves through acquisition and loss of genes via mobile genetic elements, as well as homologous recombination of the core genome. This leads to new clones emerging locally and eventually spreading globally, posing challenges for the control of this pathogen.

Antimicrobial Resistance in Humans, Animals, Water and Household Environs in Rural Andean Peru: Exploring Dissemination Pathways through the One Health Lens

Stella M. Hartinger et al.

Summary: The study conducted in rural communities in Peru aimed to describe E. coli antimicrobial resistance, identifying potential dissemination routes in humans, water sources, household environments, and domestic animals. The results showed high prevalence of resistant E. coli strains in various samples, highlighting the interconnectedness of transmission pathways and the need for further molecular analysis.

Multiresistant Bacteria Isolated from Intestinal Faeces of Farm Animals in Austria

Herbert Galler et al.

Summary: In recent years, antibiotic-resistant bacteria have become more common in food due to the use of antibiotics in animal husbandry, leading to food becoming a source of such resistant bacteria. This study found a lower frequency of multidrug-resistant bacteria in food compared to other studies, with ESBL-producing E. coli being dominant in swine and broilers.

The association between antimicrobials and the antimicrobial-resistant phenotypes and resistance genes of Escherichia coli isolated from hospital wastewaters and adjacent surface waters in Sri Lanka

Keerthi S. Guruge et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of antimicrobials, ARB, and ARGs in hospital wastewaters and surface waters. Results showed that certain resistant genes were associated with personal care products, and disparities were observed in the release of ARB and ARGs into downstream waters based on specific factors such as site, treatment, and year.

Gene Transfer Potential of Outer Membrane Vesicles of Gram-Negative Bacteria

Federica Dell'Annunziata et al.

Summary: Outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) released by Gram-negative bacteria are rounded nanostructures that can encapsulate biologically active toxins and virulence factors, and have been recently found to mediate horizontal gene transfer processes. Little is known about the packaging, release, and transfer mechanisms of OMVs, but they play an important role in HGT processes in bacteria.

Outer Membrane Vesicles Derived from Klebsiella pneumoniae Are a Driving Force for Horizontal Gene Transfer

Federica Dell'Annunziata et al.

Summary: Gram-negative bacteria release Outer Membrane Vesicles (OMVs) as vectors for horizontal gene transfer, particularly transferring plasmids containing resistance genes from Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae). The transfer is influenced by the plasmid copy number and the identity of the plasmid. K. pneumoniae-OMVs can transfer plasmids between species regardless of their phylogenetic characteristics.

Distribution of Antimicrobial Resistance and Virulence Genes within the Prophage-Associated Regions in Nosocomial Pathogens

Kohei Kondo et al.

Summary: This study found significant differences in the distribution of antimicrobial resistance and virulence factor genes in prophage-like regions among different species. The location of antimicrobial resistance genes in prophages is near transposase and/or integrase, with prophages containing class 1 integrase having more antimicrobial resistance genes. The results show distinct patterns between prophages encoding antimicrobial resistance genes and those encoding virulence factor genes.

Plasmid- and strain-specific factors drive variation in ESBL-plasmid spread in vitro and in vivo

Fabienne Benz et al.

Summary: This study found that clinical Escherichia coli strains associated with ESBL-producing plasmids could conjugate with other E. coli and Salmonella strains in the absence of antibiotics, with transconjugant frequencies influenced by plasmid properties, donor and recipient strains, as well as the presence of transfer genes on ESBL-plasmids and plasmid incompatibility. The results suggest that plasmid spread in the complex gut environment of animals and humans can be predicted based on in vitro testing and genetic data.
