Rejection of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in aqueous film-forming foam by high-pressure membranes

Charlie J. Liu et al.

Summary: The widespread use of PFASs has led to water contamination globally. High-pressure membranes like NF and RO are effective barriers to PFASs, with NF showing higher rejection rates for PFAAs and lower rejection rates in AFFF-impacted groundwater matrices. Operating conditions did not significantly impact the rejection of PFASs, except for shorter chain PFSAs, where rejection increased with flux. Structure-activity analysis showed some correlation between rejection rates and compound molecular weight, with adsorptive losses of PFAAs observed in membrane elements and systems. Despite this, NF consistently maintained rejection rates > 98% over 13 days.

Electrochemical technologies combined with membrane filtration

Ane Urtiaga

Summary: This article reviews the recent progress in the coupling of membrane separation and electrochemical technologies for water treatment. Process integration strategies are classified into three groups, including electrocoagulation and electrooxidation as pretreatment for reducing membrane fouling, and electrooxidation as remediation treatment for concentrate of priority pollutants. The article evaluates the optimal integration of technologies using process systems engineering tools for producing purified water with minimized energy consumption and total costs. Overall, it concludes that preconcentration strategy enhances electrooxidation performance to degrade persistent pollutants.

Removal of Trace Organic Contaminants by Parallel Operation of Reverse Osmosis and Granular Activated Carbon for Drinking Water Treatment

Norbert Konradt et al.

Summary: The study found that low-pressure reverse osmosis shows stable performance in removing trace organic contaminants, while activated carbon filtration also demonstrates significant removal for most TrOCs. Operating these two technologies in parallel can produce drinking water with adjustable hardness and significantly reduced TrOCs.

Reverse osmosis and nanofiltration membranes for highly efficient PFASs removal: overview, challenges and future perspectives

Teresa F. Mastropietro et al.

Summary: This article highlights the urgent need to address the shortage of clean and safe water resources due to factors such as population growth, consumerism, climate change, and pollution. It discusses the potential of reverse osmosis and nanofiltration membrane separation technologies in solving water scarcity issues, particularly in removing contaminants like PFASs. The challenges and future directions in improving membrane performance for PFAS removal are also explored, aiming to advance RO and NF technology for water treatment.
