Effects of sediment manipulation on freely dissolved concentrations of hydrophobic organic chemicals

Michiel T. O. Jonker

Summary: This study investigated the impact of freezing, freeze-drying, and grinding on the C-free of HOCs in field sediments determined with SPME. Freezing and subsequent grinding of samples increased the C-free of PAHs up to a factor of 16. It is suggested that these sample manipulations should be avoided before ex situ C-free determinations to prevent overestimation of risks.

Impact of flooding on urban soils: Changes in antibiotic resistance and bacterial community after Hurricane Harvey

Abigail Perez-Valdespino et al.

Summary: Major perturbations in soil and water quality can negatively impact human health. This study found that urban flooding events can lead to increased risk of exposure to antibiotic-resistant bacteria in soil for up to three to five months post-hurricane, with a reduction in risk observed eighteen months after the event.

Attention to the Tripartite's one health measures in national action plans on antimicrobial resistance

Louise Munkholm et al.

Summary: The study found that almost all AMR NAPs address the three key sectors of One Health, with OH measures primarily applied in policies related to human health care, food production, hygiene, and agriculture. However, the level of attention to OH measures is generally low in sanitation, aquaculture, waste management, and water governance, especially in NAPs from high-income countries.

Artificial intelligence in the water domain: Opportunities for responsible use

Neelke Doorn

Summary: In recent years, there has been a rapid development of artificial intelligence technology and many countries have put forward initiatives to develop responsible AI aligned with human and ethical values. The application of AI technology in the water domain is relatively limited, but has great potential. The development and application of responsible AI techniques for the water sector require collaborative efforts between water professionals and data scientists, along with expertise from social sciences and humanities.

Dawning of a new ERA: Environmental Risk Assessment of antibiotics and their potential to select for antimicrobial resistance

Aimee K. Murray et al.

Summary: Antibiotics and antimicrobials are widely used, misused and overused in human and veterinary medicine, animal husbandry and aquaculture, potentially leading to the enrichment of antimicrobial resistant bacteria in the environment. There is a need to develop a new methodology for environmental risk assessment to ensure that diffuse and point source discharges are safe choices.

Use of a large dataset to develop new models for estimating the sorption of active pharmaceutical ingredients in soils and sediments

Jun Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated the sorption behavior of APIs in soils and sediments and developed new models using machine learning methods to estimate sorption coefficients. The random forest-based model performed best, accurately predicting sorption coefficients and aiding in assessing the sorption behavior of untested molecules and landscape-level risk assessments.

Record of trace organic contaminants in a river sediment core: From historical wastewater management to historical use

Thomas Thiebault et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence of 41 TrOCs in a sedimentary core from a disused dock along the Seine River in France. It found 23 TrOCs were detected over a 60-year period, with concentrations mainly ranging between 1 and 10 ng g(-1). The study also showed that recent upgrades in wastewater treatment technologies have decreased the concentrations of TrOCs despite an increase in diversity.
