Suspect and Nontarget Screening Revealed Class-Specific Temporal Trends (2000-2017) of Poly- and Perfluoroalkyl Substances in St. Lawrence Beluga Whales

Holly Barrett et al.

Summary: The study investigated the temporal trends of PFASs in beluga whales from the St. Lawrence Estuary in Canada from 2000 to 2017, finding that certain legacy PFASs decreased while unregulated short-chain PFAS alternatives increased over time. Suspect and nontarget screening revealed class-specific temporal trends of PFASs, confirming continuous emissions of unregulated PFASs into the environment. The study also highlighted the higher concentrations of PFASs in newborns and juveniles compared to adults due to potential placental and lactational transfer.

Extended suspect screening to identify contaminants of emerging concern in riverine and coastal ecosystems and assessment of environmental risks

Mira Celic et al.

Summary: A suspect screening methodology was developed to identify 360 contaminants of emerging concern in the Ebro Delta, Spain. Among these suspects, 37 compounds were tentatively identified, with 22 fully confirmed. The compounds included pesticides, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, stimulants, and metabolites, with ten compounds being of high ecological concern as potential markers of anthropogenic contamination.

Suspect Screening, Prioritization, and Confirmation of Environmental Chemicals in Maternal-Newborn Pairs from San Francisco

Aolin Wang et al.

Summary: A proof-of-concept study was conducted to identify and prioritize potentially ubiquitous chemical exposures during a critical period of development by analyzing matched maternal/cord blood samples. Liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry was used to screen around 3500 industrial chemicals, resulting in the tentative identification of 73 suspects and confirmation of 17 chemical features. The study also identified 55 compounds not previously reported in the literature, highlighting the limited information available on their sources and uses.

Recognition and Prioritization of Chemical Mixtures and Transformation Products in Chinese Estuarine Waters by Suspect Screening Analysis

Xiaoxia Feng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence and compositions of ToxCast chemicals in surface waters from 20 rivers along the east coast of China. A total of 59 ToxCast chemicals in seven use categories were identified, with pesticides, intermediates, and pharmaceuticals being the abundant analogues. Significant differences in pollutant composition profiles were noticed, possibly reflecting singular release pattern and geographical-relevant usage preference.

Establishment of a Target, Suspect, and Functional Group-Dependent Screening Strategy for Organophosphate Esters (OPEs): Into the Unknown of OPEs in the Sediment of Taihu Lake, China

Langjie Ye et al.

Summary: This study developed an effective strategy for comprehensive screening of OPEs in environmental samples and successfully applied it to sediment samples from Taihu Lake. The study identified new OPEs, observed trends in OPE concentrations with distance from the lake coast, and found significant correlations between certain OPEs.

Serum concentrations of neonicotinoids, and their associations with lipid molecules of the general residents in Wuxi City, Eastern China

Qianyu Chen et al.

Summary: This study revealed relatively high detection frequencies of four neonicotinoid insecticides in serum samples of general residents in Wuxi city, Eastern China, along with significant correlations between NNI levels and population characteristics such as age, smoking, and health status. Additionally, significant correlations were observed between the concentrations of selected NNIs and levels of specific lipid molecular species.
