Phoresy in animals: review and synthesis of a common but understudied mode of dispersal

Summary: Phoresy is a type of interaction where one species uses another for transportation to new habitats or resources. It is prevalent in animals but little is known about its ecology and evolution. The majority of species engaging in phoresy are arthropods, predominantly in terrestrial habitats, with many being small, relatively immobile, and utilizing ephemeral or widely dispersed habitats.
