Nonlinear vibrations of gradient and nonlocal elastic nano-bars

Saeed H. Moghtaderi et al.

Summary: This study examines the nonlinear vibration characteristics of elastic nano-bars with large vibration amplitudes and proposes an effective analytical method. By applying the nonlocal elasticity theory and strain gradient elasticity theory, the method considers the nano-scale effects and non-classical boundary conditions. This analytical approach can be used for optimized design of vibration-based nano-devices and addressing nonlinear dynamic phenomena.

Nonlocal strong forms of thin plate, gradient elasticity, magneto-electro-elasticity and phase-field fracture by nonlocal operator method

Huilong Ren et al.

Summary: In this paper, a method based on nonlocal operator method is proposed for deriving nonlocal forms for various physical problems, such as elasticity, thin plate, gradient elasticity, electro-magneto-elasticity, and phase-field fracture method. The method is simple and general, and can efficiently convert local physical models into nonlocal forms. A criterion based on the instability of the nonlocal gradient is also proposed for fracture modeling in linear elasticity.

Free vibration of a nanogrid based on Eringen's stress gradient model

Seyed Mojtaba Hozhabrossadati et al.

Summary: This article discusses the free vibration analysis of a two-member nanogrid using nonlocal elasticity theory. By considering the interaction of bending and torsion and utilizing the variational method, the natural frequencies of the structure are analytically solved. A finite element solution is developed, with comparison showing excellent agreement between exact and numerical results, serving as benchmarks for future researchers.

Stability buckling and bending of nanobeams including cutouts

Mostafa A. Hamed et al.

Summary: This manuscript presents a comprehensive model and numerical studies to investigate the impact of perforation parameters on critical buckling loads and static bending of thin and thick nanobeams. Analytical closed-form solutions are provided for buckling loads and static deflections, using Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam theories for thin and thick beams respectively. The inclusion of nonlocal elasticity theory allows for consideration of the size scale effect, which is not accounted for in classical theory. Numerical studies demonstrate the influences of factors such as long-range atomic interaction, hole perforation size, number of rows of holes, and boundary conditions on the buckling loads and deflection of perforated nanobeams. The recommended model has implications for the design of nanoresonators and nanoactuators in NEMS structures and nanotechnology.

A finite element formulation using four-unknown incorporating nonlocal theory for bending and free vibration analysis of functionally graded nanoplates resting on elastic medium foundations

Van-Ke Tran et al.

Summary: A finite element model using four-unknown shear deformation theory integrated with the nonlocal theory is proposed for the bending and free vibration analysis of functionally graded nanoplates resting on elastic foundations. Numerical results demonstrate the accuracy and reliability of the present approach, while also investigating the effects of geometrical parameters, material parameters, and nonlocal parameters on the static bending and free vibration responses of the nanoplates in detail.

Dynamics of nonlocal thick nano-bars

S. Ali Faghidian et al.

Summary: The thick bar model is a comprehensive structural theory that considers lateral deformation, shear stiffness, and lateral inertia effect to study the axial deformation of carbon nanotubes. By applying a consistent variational framework, the physically motivated definition of the axial force field and higher order boundary conditions are determined. The nonlocal integral elasticity is used to properly account for long-range interactions, and the established size-dependent thick bar model is exempt from the drawbacks of the nonlocal differential formulation.

Amplitude motion and frequency simulation of a composite viscoelastic microsystem within modified couple stress elasticity

Hongwei Liu et al.

Summary: This research investigates amplitude motion and frequency simulation of a thick annular microsystem with graphene nanoplatelets reinforcement using the modified couple stress theory (MCST). The Halpin-Tsai micromechanics model is employed to model the effective Young module, and the generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM) is used to obtain eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the microsystem. Results show that under certain conditions, the influence of length scale parameter on the amplitude and frequency of the microsystem can be ignored, and increasing the thickness of the graphene nanoplatelets decreases this influence on frequency.

Postbuckling analysis of hydrostatic pressurized FGM microsized shells including strain gradient and stress-driven nonlocal effects

Xiaohui Yang et al.

Summary: This study examines the size-dependent nonlinear buckling and postbuckling behavior of microsized shells made of functionally graded material (FGM) under hydrostatic pressure using the theory of nonlocal strain gradient elasticity. The incorporation of nonlocality and strain gradient micro-size dependency into a shell theory results in a more comprehensive model with refined distribution of shear deformation. The Mori-Tanaka homogenization scheme is used to estimate effective material properties of FGM nanoshells, and perturbation-based solving process is employed to extract explicit expressions for stability paths of hydrostatic pressurized FGM microsized shells with nonlocal strain gradient effects.

Summary: Size-dependent dynamic responses of small-size frames are modeled and evaluated using stress-driven non-local elasticity and a consistent finite-element methodology. The exact dynamic stiffness matrix is evaluated for a two-node stress-driven nonlocal beam element, and a global dynamic stiffness matrix for an arbitrarily-shaped small-size frame is built using standard finite-element assembly procedures. The methodology is suitable for investigating free vibrations of small-size systems in Nano-Engineering.

Summary: This study analyzed the static bending response of Timoshenko beam under different boundary and loading conditions, comparing the use of nonlocal strain gradient models in differential and integral forms. The results showed that the integral form of the model exhibited consistent softening and toughening responses in static bending, while the differential form showed inconsistent responses.

On the regularity of curvature fields in stress-driven nonlocal elastic beams

Marzia Sara Vaccaro et al.

Summary: In this study, elastostatic problems of Bernoulli-Euler nanobeams were investigated using the stress-driven nonlocal elasticity model, resulting in the output of elastic curvature fields. It was shown that fields of elastic curvature associated with piecewise smooth source fields and bi-exponential kernels are continuously differentiable in the whole domain. The effectiveness of interface conditions was demonstrated through the solution of an exemplar assemblage of beams subjected to discontinuous and concentrated loadings and to thermal curvatures nonlocally associated with discontinuous thermal gradients.

Limit behaviour of Eringen's two-phase elastic beams

Marzia Sara Vaccaro et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the bending behavior of small-scale Bernoulli-Euler beams using Eringen's two-phase local/nonlocal theory of elasticity. It finds that some obtained solutions do not meet equilibrium requirements and kinematic boundary conditions, therefore cannot be assumed as solutions of the purely nonlocal theory of beam elasticity. This conclusion aligns with the known result that the elastic equilibrium problem of beams formulated by Eringen's purely nonlocal theory admits no solution.

Summary: In this study, an analytical solution for the free vibration of nanoplates made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) was provided using a new refined plate theory and Eringen's non-local elasticity theory. Various parameters affecting the natural frequencies of nanoplates were discussed, with significant influences observed. The proposed solution method successfully handled the problem and provided convenience in examining the non-local free vibration of functionally graded nanoplates.
