Design and evaluation of a conceptual waste-to-energy approach integrating plasma waste gasification with coal-fired power generation

Peiyuan Pan et al.

Summary: A hybrid design combining waste gasification and coal-fired power generation has been proposed to improve the waste-to-energy process. In this integrated scheme, municipal solid waste is converted into syngas in a plasma gasifier, then utilized for electricity production through the steam cycle of a coal power plant with an efficiency of 35.16%. The proposed waste-to-energy system can recover the initial investment in just 4.58 years and achieve a net present value of 40,341.00 k$ over its 25-year lifetime.

Char reactivity and kinetics based on the dynamic char structure during gasification by CO2

Mengjie Liu et al.

Summary: Coal char reactivity is crucial for gasifier design and operation, and is dynamic with reaction during gasification. In-situ char reactivity increases and then decreases due to gas switch step, graphitization degree increase, and inhibition effect of minerals, while ex-situ char reactivity is initially controlled by chemical structure and later by catalytic activity of minerals. The unreaction core model (URCM) is suitable for interpreting gasification kinetics based on dynamic char structure.

Progress in pyrolysis conversion of waste into value-added liquid pyro-oil, with focus on heating source and machine learning analysis

Shengbo Ge et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the influence of different heating sources on pyro-oil yield, discussing key process parameters and mechanisms involved. Machine learning techniques were used to develop a predictive model, identifying microwave heating as the most efficient method for oil yield. Future work should aim at optimizing heating methods and rates to achieve optimal pyro-oil yield and quality.

In situ experimental study of CO2 gasification of petcoke particles on molten slag surface at high temperature

Ming Liu et al.

Summary: The gasification reaction of petcoke on the wall slag layer is an important issue during the co-gasification process of coal and petcoke. The catalytic effect of slag on petcoke gasification on slag surface was demonstrated, but only effective when the particle is on the surface of slag. In addition, the increased residence time of petcoke can increase the carbon conversion compared with that in the gasifier chamber, indicating the importance of synergy between catalytic effect of slag and decreased reaction surface area.

Characteristics of lignite char derived from oxy-pyrolysis

Jianan Qi et al.

Summary: The impacts of temperature and oxygen concentration on char structure evolution during pyrolysis were revealed using Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and BET characterization techniques. Char prepared under oxygen atmosphere showed higher reactivity compared to that under inert (N2) atmosphere, with the presence of oxygen reducing char graphitization at high temperatures. The presence of oxygen in pyrolysis improved pore volume and specific surface area, with a critical oxygen concentration observed at high pyrolysis temperatures.

Study on the effect of inherent AAEM on char structure evolution during coal pyrolysis by in-situ Raman and TG

Junqin Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of inherent minerals, especially alkali and alkaline earth metals (AAEM), on the thermal characteristics and carbon structure evolution of char during pyrolysis. Water-soluble and ion-exchangeable AAEM promote the breaking/reforming of bonds between alkyl substitutional groups and aromatic ring systems, delaying volatiles release and orderly evolution of carbon structure. Water-soluble AAEM have more severe effects due to stable bonds between divalent alkaline earth metal and carbon, while ion-exchangeable AAEM inhibit cross-linked structures generation effectively.

Junlin Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, the high-temperature gasification and melting properties of pyrolysis residues from petrochemical sludge were experimentally investigated. CO2 gasification of straw biomass and its correlation with the feedstock characteristics

Siqin Li et al.

Summary: The study found that straw biomass with higher cellulose and hemicellulose content, such as corn straw, wheat straw, and rice straw, exhibited higher pyrolysis reactivity. In the char gasification stage, the content of fixed carbon and catalytic ash components played a significant role in determining weight loss and reactivity, with corn straw, cotton straw, and soybean straw performing better in char gasification. Kinetics results showed that the homogeneous reaction model better described the pyrolysis stage, while the shrinking core model was more suitable for the char gasification stage in all straw biomass.

Gasification reactivity and characteristics of coal chars and petcokes

Ruidi Wei et al.

Summary: The study found that there were significant differences in gasification reactivity between coal chars and petcokes, with the gasification reactivity of coal chars increasing as coal rank decreased. The characteristics of the chars were closely related to their gasification reactivity, with lower degree of graphitization and more developed pore structure leading to higher gasification reactivity. Furthermore, the presence of oxygen-containing functional groups and active components in coal chars had a promoting effect on the gasification reaction.
