Numerical modeling of biomass fast pyrolysis by using an improved comprehensive reaction scheme for energy analysis

Thoharudin et al.

Summary: In this study, an improved comprehensive pyrolysis scheme was developed by modifying bio-oil and gas species fractions, increasing carbon fraction in the char, and combining metaplastic decompositions for energy analysis. The model accurately predicted pyrolysis product yields, compositions, and energy distributions, with relative errors of 0.61%, 9.54%, and -3.76% for bio-oil, gas, and char energies, respectively. Energy distributions were mainly influenced by pyrolysis product yields rather than energy density.

Gas Characteristics of Pine Sawdust Catalyzed Pyrolysis by Additives

Dongling Yu et al.

Summary: The addition of different additives has various effects on the gas production characteristics of pine sawdust. Gas yield increases with temperature, while liquid yield is higher at lower temperatures and remains relatively stable. Among the additives, Na2CO3 has the most significant impact on hydrogen gas production.

Investigating biomass composition and size effects on fast pyrolysis using global sensitivity analysis and CFD simulations

Liqiang Lu et al.

Summary: Building an accurate universal model for biomass pyrolysis is challenging due to its sensitivity to critical material attributes such as chemical species and physical sizes. This study implemented a biomass pyrolysis kinetics in an open-source CFD software, validated against experimental data, and showed sensitivity of pyrolysis yields to feedstock compositions through a reaction scheme with heterogeneous reactions and species. The study's results can guide the development of accurate models for fast pyrolysis reactors under various operating conditions.

Comparison of tar thermal cracking and catalytic reforming by char in a micro fluidized bed reaction analyzer

Dandan Hu et al.

Summary: In this study, the isothermal reaction characteristics of tar catalytic reforming by char and thermal cracking by quartz sand were comprehensively analyzed using a micro fluidized bed reactor analyzer (MFBRA). The catalytic cracking showed higher yield and lower activation energy compared to thermal cracking, impacting both tar conversion and gas generation pathways positively.

Fast pyrolysis of pitch pine biomass in a bubbling fluidized-bed reactor for bio-oil production

Quoc Khanh Tran et al.

Summary: The kinetic parameters of biomass pyrolysis from Pitch Pine were studied, showing that the optimal temperature for bio-oil yield was 500 degrees Celsius with a maximum of 65.5%. The bio-oil had a high heating value ranging from 22MJ/kg to 24MJ/kg, and contained useful chemicals such as levoglucosan, furfural, and guaiacol. The pyrolyzed oil from Pitch Pine trees showed promise as a biofuel candidate due to the production of a significant amount of C-5-C-11 (gasoline fraction).

Interaction and kinetic analysis of co-gasification of bituminous coal with walnut shell under CO2 atmosphere: Effect of inorganics and carbon structures

Rui Diao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the co-gasification behaviors and synergistic interaction of bituminous coal and walnut shell under CO2 atmosphere. The results showed that the addition of walnut shell significantly enhanced the gasification reactivity of coal, and a high coal/biomass blend ratio induced the formation of amorphous carbons and further accelerated the co-gasification reaction.
