Characterization and risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emissions by coal fire in northern China

Ming Liang et al.

Summary: The study found high emissions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), especially naphthalene and phenanthrene, in the Wuda coalfield and Suhaitu mining area of northern China, due to coal spontaneous combustion. The PAHs concentration in coal fire sponges reached 17,416 micrograms per kilogram, indicating a significant level of contamination. The results suggest that the content of phenanthrene and naphthalene may serve as a new indicator for identifying coal fire emission sources.

The dating of petroleum fluid residence time in subsurface reservoirs. Part 2: Tracking effects of radiolysis on crude oil by comprehensive molecular analysis

Renzo C. Silva et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of gamma radiation on crude oil composition using ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. It was found that oils with lower density and higher saturated hydrocarbon content are more susceptible to radiolysis, and the presence of water leads to the formation of oxygen-bearing organic compounds. The research also suggests the possibility of radiolysis-induced polymerization reactions and a decrease in sulfur and nitrogen-bearing species with increased radiation dose.
