Essential basics on biomass torrefaction, densification and utilization

Adekunle A. Adeleke et al.

Summary: Torrefaction and densification are essential steps in upgrading biomass for energy and metallurgical applications, especially in developing nations. Biomass materials have great potential as clean energy sources, but they face challenges such as high moisture content and poor storage properties, which can be improved through torrefaction.

Catalytic conversion of corncob biomass into bioethanol

B. Rekha et al.

Summary: In this study, iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized from Spinacia oleracea by green synthesis method and sulfonated to produce an active nanocatalyst for the hydrolysis of corncob into sugar and further bioethanol production. The compositional analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy were used to study the functional group and morphology changes of biomass. The effects of catalyst dosage and temperature on sugar yield were also investigated.

Evolution of chemical functional groups during torrefaction of rice straw

Liu Xiaorui et al.

Summary: The evolution of CHON functional groups during torrefaction of rice straw at 200-300 degrees C was investigated. Results showed that 300 degrees C was more suitable for rice straw torrefaction due to ideal fuel ratio and significantly improved HHV. The release of N-containing gases during torrefaction should be highly concerned for environmental perspective.

Study on the effect of inherent AAEM on char structure evolution during coal pyrolysis by in-situ Raman and TG

Junqin Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of inherent minerals, especially alkali and alkaline earth metals (AAEM), on the thermal characteristics and carbon structure evolution of char during pyrolysis. Water-soluble and ion-exchangeable AAEM promote the breaking/reforming of bonds between alkyl substitutional groups and aromatic ring systems, delaying volatiles release and orderly evolution of carbon structure. Water-soluble AAEM have more severe effects due to stable bonds between divalent alkaline earth metal and carbon, while ion-exchangeable AAEM inhibit cross-linked structures generation effectively.

A review of the effects of alkali and alkaline earth metal species on biomass gasification

Junqin Yu et al.

Summary: The effects of alkali and alkaline earth metals on the component and distribution of products, gasification reactivity, catalytic mechanism, and char-ash/slag transition during biomass gasification were reviewed. Studies show that the catalytic role of AAEM in biomass gasification is significant, impacting product distribution, gasification reactivity, and char-ash/slag transition.

Comparative indexes, fuel characterization and thermogravimetric-Fourier transform infrared spectrometer-mass spectrogram (TG-FTIR-MS) analysis of microalga Nannochloropsis Oceanica under oxidative and inert torrefaction

Congyu Zhang et al.

Summary: The torrefaction performances of microalga Nannochloropsis Oceanica under oxidative and inert atmospheres were compared based on operating parameters, with results suggesting that oxidative torrefaction enhances energy efficiency and yield. Peak temperatures of torrefied microalgae increased, particularly in oxidative atmosphere, while oxidative torrefaction was found to be more reactive and suitable for producing bio-oil with specific components.
