Assessment and Perspectives of Heat Transfer Fluids for CSP Applications

Alberto Giaconia et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comparative assessment of different heat transfer fluids (HTF) for concentrating solar power (CSP) applications, including synthetic oils and molten salt mixtures. It analyzes the impact of these HTF options on the design and operation of CSP plants from a techno-economic perspective, reviewing physical properties, operation ranges, corrosion, and environmental issues. The study also includes experimental data obtained by the authors to thoroughly compare the different HTF solutions.

Techno-economic assessment of solar steam reforming of methane in a membrane reactor using molten salts as heat transfer fluid

Alberto Giaconia et al.

Summary: This paper reports on the development and demonstration of Steam Methane Reforming technology aided with solar heat in the European FCH JU project CoMETHy, as well as a techno-economic analysis of this new solar-driven process. The study shows that the technology is competitive in a solar-hybrid system, reducing total CO2 production effectively, but still faces the challenge of relatively high CO2 avoidance costs and requires further optimization measures.
