Variable smoothing of optimal diesel engine calibration for improved performance and drivability during transient operation

Varun Pandey et al.

Summary: The model-based method for defining optimal calibration maps for diesel engine parameters involves three major steps: identifying the engine speed and load domain, creating a global engine model for offline simulations, and obtaining optimal calibration maps by solving an optimization problem. This process typically includes smoothing the maps to improve drivability, and a trade-off was found between map smoothness, fuel consumption, and nitrogen oxide emissions. Experimental results showed that a time-varying smoothness strategy could reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 4% without sacrificing drivability and fuel consumption.
